Braai means grill in Afrikaans, the Dutch-Zulu-Xhosa-English mash-up language that has evolved here since 1652, when the first Europeans arrived in South Africa from the Netherlands. Locals say it is the only word recognized by all of the nation’s 11 official languages. Rump steak, shown here, from the part that American butchers call round, is a popular cut for braai.
