ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A 48-year-old Orangeburg woman has been formally charged with the murder of her boyfriend.

Dorene Huggins made her first court appearance Thursday where she was charged with the stabbing death of a Dellwood Drive man.

"Orangeburg County Magistrate Peggy Doremus informed the woman of her rights before deferring any bond consideration for circuit court," OCSO officials said.

According to authorities, Huggins was arrested early Wednesday after Orangeburg County Sheriff's investigators determined she stabbed her boyfriend during what witnesses said was an altercation between the two.

"The 58-year-old man was declared dead at an Armstrong Terrace location where he was found lying on the ground," OCSO officials said.

The sheriff's office reported that EMS workers were initially called out around 3 a.m. Wednesday in response to a male suffering from what was reported as an asthma attack.

"Emergency workers discovered the man had what appeared to be a stab wound, however," OCSO officials said.

Huggins was arrested at the scene.
