Grimes: Visions – review

Typical. You spend an age longing for more exciting female electronic artists and then three come along at once. Joining the likes of Fever Ray, Zola Jesus, Nite Jewel and Julia Holter in a burgeoning pantheon is Claire "Grimes" Boucher, based in Montreal. Her third album is a beguiling decoction of pretty much everything going on in hipster musical circles, sweet and savvy and scary at the same time. At heart, these 13 tracks are deconstructions of pop and R&B, glazed by Boucher's girly vocals and touched by both the hazy nostalgia of chillwave and the shivers of witch house. "Oblivion" is an obvious standout, even as it recalls 80s lightweight Tiffany; "Colour of Moonlight" betrays sound knowledge of Prince.
