Mobile messenger Kakao has made strides in its taxi-hailing business as the number of requests for KakaoTaxi crossed 50 million as of Sunday, the firm said Wednesday.

Demand for the taxi-hailing app has boomed since its launch in March, seeing 1 million ride requests in less than two months.

The number of taxis registered for the KakaoTaxi service has also been on the rise, with more than 190,000, or around 70 percent of all taxis nationwide, now partnering with Kakao.

“Even though many were skeptical about KakaoTaxi in the beginning, the mobile app is now widely used by many people,” said an official from Kakao.

The mobile messenger operator also launched its premium taxi-hailing service KakaoTaxi Black, which provides ride services with 100 premium sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

In a bid to enhance user convenience, the company will expand partnerships with taxi operators and come up with new payment measures such as in-app mobile payment solutions.
