Disney is hot on the search for an actor to play young Han Solo in its upcoming Star Wars spinoff film, and has whittled its list down to about a dozen actors, according to Variety.

The shortlist of frontrunners for the role includes Miles Teller (Whiplash), Ansel Egort (The Fault In Our Stars), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Emory Cohen (Brooklyn), and Blake Jenner (Glee).

The studio reportedly shortened its list after watching screenings from thousands of actors, with non-disclosure agreements and test deals still in the works for the list of final contenders. Disney will look to solidify its choice for young Han Solo as soon as possible. The oldest actor currently in contention is Scott Eastwood (29), but the studio allegedly screened actors between ages 17 and 34 for the role.

The Han Solo spinoff project will not begin shooting until January of 2017, but sources told Variety that the early casting decision has to do with the closer spinoff film currently on the docket, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is set to be released on December 16, 2016. That film takes place between Episode III and IV of the series, and is about the squad of anti-imprerialists who steals the plans for the first death star.

Such a quick casting timeline could mean that whoever is cast as Solo gets a brief cameo in the first Star Wars spinoff film before heading into his own feature project early next year. And that would fit with production schedules; Rogue One still has a month of filming left before it hits post-production.

Whoever the studio chooses, the actor still has a long time to wait before his portrayal of young Han hits screens for the first time. The Han Solo spinoff is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2018.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (June 2024)
Kevin Hart and John Cena in Die Har 2: Die Harter.

Amazon Prime Video subscibers are going to have to wait one more day for the June movies to arrive, including Paul Thomas Anderson's classic Punch-Drunk Love. The good news is that Prime Video had one more big release in May that's topping the charts at the moment: Die Hart 2: Die Harter.

Additionally, only a handful of titles were dropped from Prime Video's library for June. So many recent films from Universal Pictures and Paramount remain available. And later this month, Universal's Oppenheimer will be coming to Prime Video as well. Since that's the reigning winner for Best Picture at the Oscars, it's going to be a popular selection.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (June 2024)
Antonio Banderas in Security.

There are better times coming for Netflix this summer, but the first weekend of June is pretty quiet by streaming standards. Jennifer Lopez's sci-fi flick Atlas remains on top of the list of the most popular movies on Netflix. Even Madame Web is hanging around in the top five, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie is once again showing its dominance by climbing up the charts nearly seven months after arriving on Netflix.

This week's newcomers include Security, an action thriller starring Antonio Banderas that went largely unnoticed in 2017. But as we've seen many times before, Netflix subscribers flock to films that never hit it big in theaters. Our second new addition of the week is Butterfly in the Sky, a 2022 documentary about Reading Rainbow.
