Tugboat crew member from Staten Island missing after deadly crash on Hudson River

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Emergency responders are searching for a tugboat crew member from Staten Island who went missing after the boat crashed into a barge on the Hudson River, killing two others on board, officials said.

The missing crew member has been identified as Harry Hernandez, 56. State Police divers were out Sunday afternoon searching the water for his body.

Authorities said the 90-foot tugboat named Specialist struck a stationary construction barge early Saturday morning near where the new Tappan Zee Bridge is being built.

The tugboat sank, leaking about 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the water.

Emergency responders had recovered the bodies of two crew members from the water. They were identified as Timothy Conklin, 29, of Long Island, and Paul Amon, 62, of Bayville, N.J.

Authorities said three tugboats were pushing a barge from Albany to Jersey City, when one of the three - situated on the right side as it headed south - hit a stationary barge that was part of the Tappan Zee Bridge construction project. A tugboat on the left side of the barge that was being pushed, as well as one that was pushing the barge from the rear, were not involved in the accident.

Authorities believed the sunken tug is wedged directly underneath the barge it struck at the mid-span of the bridge.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said Sunday that emergency responders were still attempting to locate the third crew member.

He called the crash a "pure accident," during a press conference.

In a statement, Cuomo said a team from the state Department of Environmental Conservation was on site with a private contractor and were deploying booms to contain the leaking fuel. He said he did not expect any "long-term damage" as a result of the spill.

More information on the missing Staten Islander was not immediately available.
