Shaman

Rate this book
In the never-ending battle between good and evil, not even death is permanent. The Shaman, a mysterious mage with a trick permanently up his sleeve and the ability to restore life, has tasked himself with raising those on both sides of the battle from the grave.
Working alongside a foul-mouthed teenage sorceress and a retired superhero bored with the life in tights, the Shaman and his adoptive family fight monsters, demons, and even the odd astronaut or two if that’s what gets the job done.

What a fun comic! I was clueless about Shaman until we started to prepare for our recent publisher spotlight podcast episode of Locust Moon Press. Kahn has an wonderfully offbeat, even sly, sense of humor. We had a good time discussing this on our recent episode, http://comicsalternative.com/episode-....

Shaman was a great surprise, since the cover didn't really convey the brilliance of the whole thing. Shaman is a about a shaman and his sidekick LL, who bring back the dead. Their duo becomes a trio when a former superhero the Vanisher joins, but it's not smooth-sailing. The comic consists of smaller stories of different kinds and I must say that the stories aren't that marvelous (they're good, but nothing out of the ordinary), but that isn't the point. The characters surely make this comic what it is and all three are amazing personas! Shaman is an extremely funny and sarcastic guy and his interaction with LL is hilarious like that of a real father and daughter. The Vanisher then is kind of not rooting for this duo's way of thinking and we get wonderfully nasty humor from this. The comic is pure perfection! My only minus comes from the fact that I would've wanted to know more about Shaman's history and the setting, since the beginning feels a little detached.

The art is great and funky! Sadly so the cover doesn't really work, since it's way too serious. The language rolls amazingly and the humor is just plain wonderful. The dark colors with splashes off pastel ones is a weird and perfect combination. The characters have actual facial expressions and the comic has action along with humor, so it's not just talking heads. The comic is constructed of pieces that don't seem to fit together on idea level, but in reality they do fit and it's a perfect match. I want more!

Ben Kahn's 'Shaman' was pretty good, but the art left me pretty cold. If you can overlook that, it's decent. Since it's a graphic novel, it's kind of a big thing to overcome.

The Shaman is a sort of surly superhero with one weird trick. He can raise people from the dead. But he can't raise everyone, and the people he sometimes chooses to bring back leave others scratching their heads. He's accompanied by a foul-mouthed teenager who gets her powers from tattoos applied by fairies. Rounding things out is a sort of retired teleporter.

The trouble starts when The Shaman wants to reanimate a supervillain. This leaves him fighting the forces of good, but the villain he is raising may just be our only hope against monsters. Or become the new monster. Endless cigarettes are smoked, battles are waged, and there is even an appearance by a celebrity.

But the art left me cold. It's a bit abstract and lacking the kind of perspective I like in art to have it seem to be grounded. Instead, it just kind of angles off to the sides. The writing is pretty good, though, and I think worth it, if you like your heroes on the snarky side.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Locust Moon and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

There was some merit to this action/character piece regarding an old-before-his-time man and his ability to summon some spirits back from the dead, his punky daughter and a new character in their small family. The humour was far too naff for me, and didn't work much at all, even if it tried to bring an edge to the proceedings. The gentler, more reflective moments were perhaps most successful – the action pieces being quite few and far between, and the different resurrected characters were far too haphazard. The format of the e-arc I received (each issue seemingly a different size and quality to the one before it) suggests the creators are still learning their trade, as does the almost poor artwork, and while this may not be the most sterling calling card, it shows just about enough quality to make it worth a quick look.

Comic collection about a shaman and his sidekick
A shaman and his sidekick, LL, work and restoring the super-powered dead to life, some good, some evil. They are joined by the Vanisher, a teleporter. The Cosmic Guardians try to stop him. There are several different stories which are quite fun.
The writing is interesting but the artwork is too “cartoony” for my liking.

I enjoyed this volume, I wasn't sure about it at first. The artwork isn't my typical but the story was good. I liked some of the issues better than the others. But I would recommend this series to others.

The art is reminiscent of Jeff Lemire, sketchy and not so great but without the intriguing story elements that make up for it.
