'Sock Monster' written by Stacey R. Campbell and illustrated by Elizabeth Thieme is a really fun read aloud kids book. It gives a lesson but so gently that the listener won't even mind.

Billy is a typical little boy with a messy room. When his mother asks him to clean up for the night, he does. Sort of. Things are out of sight, but not necessarily put where they need to be, so Billy's mom tells him a bedtime story about a creature that builds itself out of the laundry that doesn't make it into the hamper. When Billy finds a Sock Monster of his own living in his room, he does battle with it by finally doing what his mom asked him to do.

Billy has an active imagination, but he's a brave little guy. We see this in the opening page where he is battling an imaginary bear. The lesson about cleaning up is clear, but given in a fun way. The sock monster is hardly scary (except to Billy), but he gets the hint on how to defeat it.

The writing is cute and the illustrations are even more so. It's a book that kids will probably love and parents will too.

Sock Monster is a picturebook by Stacey R. Campbell. Billy is in the midst of a fun game when his mother tells him that it is time to clean up and get ready for bed. The only trouble is Billy does not want to waste time cleaning his room, so instead of cleaning his room he hides the mess. A bedtime story about the sock monster, made up of clothes not put away where they belong, keeps Billy up until he gives up and cleans up correctly. A cute story with a little twist at the end that just might lead to cleaner rooms in your house.

Sock Monster is a fun and cute story about a little boy that avoids cleaning his room. I really liked the story line, the resolution, and especially the little twist at the end when the mom starts to hear sock monster like noises herself and asks dad whether HE picked up his socks. The illustrations were fairly simple and cute. There was little in the way of background and additional details, but they conveyed the meaning and story well.

Sock Monster is a good story for bedtime reading by caregivers and parents dealing with the struggle to have a child pick up after themselves, particularly in the laundry department. It is not the only, or the best, book on the subject that I have read. However, it is fun and would make a good addition to the storytime reading pile.

The Skinny
Billy refuses to pick up after himself. His mother tells him a bedtime story about the Sock Monster, who comes to teach him a lesson.

The Players
Billy – he is a typical boy and his character illustration is adorable

Mommy – a very intuitive mom

The Highs and Lows
The Bedtime Story. How genius is this? Billy’s mom knows how to get to him in just the right way.
Billy. He is so stinking cute. I just want to scoop him up and keep him.

The Sock Monster. He is illustrated so comically and yet at the same time a little manically.

The End. The final page was hilarious. The look on the Sock Monster’s face said it all. It reminded me a little of Ally Brosh’s artwork from Hyperbole and a Half.

The Length. The story is told in a series of events that is short and clear for young readers. It is something they can read on their own.

The Take-Away
The illustrator did a beautiful job of matching the her artwork to Campbell’s story well. It is a perfect fit that tells the story both through the words and through the pictures. Billy and the Sock Monster’s expressions are priceless.

Recommendation – Buy, Borrow or Skip?
This is definitely a children’s book that should be bought. It would make an excellent stocking stuffer at this time of year!

When Billy's mom calls bed time, Billy and his bear are in the middle of a riot of adventure and fun. Toys and clothes are strewn across the floor and Billy is reluctant to clean up, pick up, and head to bed.

Before going to sleep, Billy begs for a story. His mom tells him about the Sock Monster, a creepy crawly guy made of dirty underwear and missing socks. He slithers about gobbling up pieces of dirty laundry that children haven't picked up.

The story stays with Billy as he tries to sleep; every little noise becomes the Sock Monster. Finally, Billy swings into action, picking up all his dirty clothes . . . just like Mom asked.

Sock Monster is a cute children's story with adorable illustrations. Parents, grandparents, and babysitters alike will find it a fun and imaginative bedtime book.

One of my favorite writes to date!

5 stars - Readers' Favorite
As a parent myself, I can't speak for all who are around children or have them, but it is nearly impossible to get children to pick up their toys, let alone laundry. Upon reading this book to my young daughter, I asked her, "Do you have laundry on your bedroom floor?" She responded with, "Yes, oh no, the sock monster will visit me tonight, I better go clean it up." And clean it up she did. Children's books are meant to educate or entertain small children. Sock Monster certainly does both. -Michelle Robertson

This is an adorable and very clever story for young children (and mum and dad too.) The illustrations are fun for the little ones to look at and the story is simple, yet so much fun to enjoy at bedtime or really any time.

Stacy R. Campbell has a flair for creating stories that keep you happily occupied and has now proven that her talents are versatile and that she can be a great children's book author as well.

The Sock Monster in this book is cute rather than scary and something that the kids will want to read over and over. If you have a little one in your life and are looking for a cute book to read with them, this is it.

When Billy's mom tells him it's time to go to bed and to pick up his room, he isn't thrilled with the idea. When he asks his mom for a story, she tells him all about the Sock Monster! Billy finds it very difficult to sleep after that story. He knows that every sound and movement is the Sock Monster coming for him. He realizes the only way to get rid of it, is to clean up his room and not leave anything out to feed him.

Great story that will encourage your little ones to clean up their rooms! It has adorable and imaginative illustrations that are sure to keep the kids (and adults) entertained.

My daughter is currently on a Monster kick and this book fits right in with what she loves. She also really loves monster and socks weird combination but she loves them. I have read it to her several times and she likes it. I am not sure she gets the whole picking things up yet but when she gets older this story will definitely get the point across. All the pictures were adorable and well illustrated. It had a cute message to the story. Now if I only really could get it to work on my husband. I will be on the look out for more kids books by this author.

This short children's message gets a message across to Billy in a fun way. When Billy does not clean up his room, his mother does not nag him, she tells him a story. What happens when the "Sock Monster" comes at night? Billy goes to bed, but can not sleep until he picks up the room. A cute, humorous story with wonderful illustrations. A great read aloud for toddlers and young children. A must for every family library.

Little Billy is a typical small child. He does not want to pick up after himself. When told he needs to pick up his laundry, he decides to hide the clothing under or in various parts of his room. In an effort to help Billy learn to clean up, his mother tells him a bedtime story about the Sock Monster.

Sock Monster is comical, at best. While there are elements of this story that could be scary for some children, Elizabeth Thieme's illustrations remind the child and the parent that this is a fun story.

I love picture books. I particularly love ones that have a lesson that children can learn. Campbell's book does just that. Utterly worth reading, and lovely illustrations accompany the book.
