San Francisco police recognized for rescuing woman trapped in sofa for 12 hours

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Two San Francisco police officers were recognized after rescuing an elderly woman who was trapped in her sofa bed the day after Thanksgiving.

Officers McFall and Cuthbertson discovered the 84-year-old woman trapped in the cracked frame of her sofa bed after hearing her faint calls from the hallway of her apartment.

The two had developed a relationship with the woman, regularly checking up on her and even delivering her Thanksgiving dinner.

The officers suspected some kind of danger when the received no answer as they went to visit her the next day.

They believed she had been stuck in the bed for about 12 hours and could have potentially remained there until her scheduled home help visit four days later.

Richmond District Captain Simon Silverman commended the two officers for their caring attitude towards this woman and other local seniors.

"They raised money from their fellow night watch officers then bought, cooked and delivered dinner to six seniors living alone in the Richmond," he said. "Thanksgiving was their day off, but they chose to spend it in service to others."

The woman was taken to a hospital where the next day Cuthbertson and McFall delivered her glasses, address book and cellphone room upon her request.
