SFNSEnabler

screenshot

OS X El Capitan has introduced new system fonts, which are some variations of San Francisco typeface known as .SF NS Display and .SF NS Text. By default, they are "unlisted" in the Font Book, therefore unusable from applications like TextEdit, Pixelmator, etc. SFNSEnabler allows those usage in a limited way.

Installation

Simply download and install SFNSEnabler.otf. Now you should be able to choose the fonts from applications; go to the "Show Fonts (⌘T)" menu, and search for "SF". The font might not be visible until you search for them.

The family name of the fonts varies by the language preference of your system, for example, in Korean you need to search for "시스템 서체." The complete list of the names is following, excerpted from Apple's metadata.

  • English .SF NS Display
  • Arabic (Egypt) خط النظام
  • Catalan Tipus de lletra del sistema
  • Chinese (PRC) 系统字体
  • Chinese (Taiwan) 系統字體
  • Croatian Font sustava
  • Czech Systémové písmo
  • Danish Systemskrift
  • Dutch Systeemlettertype
  • Finnish Järjestelmäfontti
  • French Police système
  • German Systemschrift
  • Greek Γραμματοσειρά συστήματος
  • Hebrew גופן מערכת
  • Hungarian Rendszerbetűtípus
  • Indonesian Fon Sistem
  • Italian Font di sistema
  • Japanese システムフォント
  • Korean 시스템 서체
  • Malay Fon Sistem
  • Polish Czcionka systemowa
  • Portuguese (Brasil) Tipo de letra do sistema
  • Portuguese (Portugal) Fonte do Sistema
  • Romanian Font de sistem
  • Russian Системный шрифт
  • Slovak Systémové písmo
  • Spanish (Modern) Tipo de letra del sistema
  • Swedish (Sweden) Systemtypsnitt
  • Thai แบบอักษรระบบ
  • Turkish Sistem Fontu
  • Ukranian Системний шрифт
  • Vietnamese Phông chữ Hệ thống

If you don't know how to install a font, see how. Ignore "Font Validation" by checking "SFNSEnabler.otf" and clicking "Install Checked."

.SF NS Text fonts are merged with .SF NS Display for some reason, but you can still select most of them under .SF NS Display; G1, G2, G3 and the italics do not belong to .SF NS Display.

Some application might behave clunky as the selected font name doesn't appear properly in the list.

Disclaimer

Use it at your own risk.

But does this harm the system? Probably not. SFNSEnabler.otf is a simple blank otf file generated using FontForge, with only one metadata "Family Name" colliding with the system fonts. It does not use any of Apple's font codes nor glyphs.
