This Japanese schoolgirl has taken the internet by storm.

At first glance, she seems like an average teenage school pupil. Except, she isn't real.

Saya was drawn on a computer using the latest CGI techniques.

The virtual schoolgirl was designed by a pair of freelance 3D graphic artists from Japan, Teruyuki and Yuki Ishikawa.

The Toyko-based husband and wife posted the finished images online – and were flooded with images from viewers who could not decide whether Saya was a real person or not.

Teruyuki and Yuki Ishikawa told renown gaming website, Kotaku: "Since we’ve been working on this between jobs, it’s been somewhat hard.

"We’re going to give it our best when making it."

Virtual schoolgirl Saya was built using a series of cutting-edge 3D modelling programs, including Matya which is used for special effects in Hollywood blockbusters.

Freelance designers Teruyuki and Yuki Ishikawa hope to bring their virtual schoolgirl to the silver screen in their own self-produced film.

"This character 'Saya' is a being created as a CG character for the self-produced movie," the couple revealed in a tweet.

The Saya image is a example of the Uncanny Valley hypothesis, identified by renown robotics Professor Masahiro Mori in the 1970s.

According to the hypothesis, when a humanoid robot or 3D computer generated image has features which look almost – but not exactly – human, it can cause involuntary revoltion.

Designers Teruyuki and Yuki Ishikawa have confirmed that Saya is not quite finished.

The Tokyo couple are hard at work perfecting the soft and translucent look of human skin along with improving the realism of the hair.
