Kitten Born Without Eyes Found on Lawn of Plainfield Home

The kitten is believed to have been dumped on the lawn because of the deformity.

A kitten born without eyes was found on the lawn of a Plainfield home Sunday morning, according to Terri Crotty, founder of Plainfield’s Wags 2 Wishes Animal Rescue.

Crotty had received a phone call from a Plainfield citizen saying that her children found a kitten in their yard.

“It was young,” Crotty said. “It looked like her eyes were just opening.”

Wags 2 Wishes isn’t a cat rescue. They specialize in dogs, but Crotty knew the Plainfield resident would have trouble getting a hold of anyone on a Sunday who could help take care of the kitten. Crotty told the woman to bring the animal in and the rescue would take care of her.

“When she brought the kitten in, right away I noticed something was wrong with the eyes,” Crotty said.

A Wags 2 Wishes volunteer brought the cat to a vet and it was determined the cat had been born without eyes.

While Crotty said she can’t prove anything, the fact that there was just one kitten left on the lawn makes her believe that someone dropped the kitten off because of the deformity.

“We’re assuming somebody dumped the kitten there because of the eyes,” Crotty said.

Because the kitten is not old enough to be placed in a home, a Wags 2 Wishes volunteer is currently taking care of the kitten and will likely adopt the animal.

The 9-ounce kitten, named Freya, will also have to undergo surgery to close the eye sockets in order to prevent infection.

Despite the lack of eyes, Freya is expected to live a normal life like any other cat.

“You’re gonna put in a little time initially training the cat on where the food and water is, where the litter box is, and sometimes, because they can’t detect the edges of a litter box, may go outside the edges a little bit, but in time you and the cat adjust to that,” Crotty said. “There’s no reason to think that it wouldn’t have the same quality of life. Cats and dogs are more resilient than people. They bounce back much quicker.”

Wags 2 Wishes is a relatively new animal rescue. It began in 2013 and the rescue opened its first facility in March of 2015. It is located at 23907 W Industrial Dr. N.
