Anne Hathaway: Jennifer Lawrence defense posted on Facebook

The collective Internet, usually such a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, was not pleased when the actress called out a reporter for being on his phone during a backstage press conference at Sunday’s Golden Globes. But Anne Hathaway believes Lawrence’s comments were “taken out of context.”

“She was dryly joking with a journalist who was indeed using his phone to take photos of her,” Hathaway wrote Friday on her verified Facebook page. “Let’s not continue the sad but common practice of building people — especially women — up just to viciously tear them down when we perceive them to have misstepped.”

Hathaway, herself a frequent lightning rod for online critique, signed the note “A J-Law fan.” The Oscar-winning actress used hashtags ‪#‎supportstrongwomen and ‪#‎imwithher to drive home her point.

After Lawrence’s remark went viral, some online theorized the reporter was not a native English speaker and needed his phone to assist in reading questions to the actress; others have claimed, however, that the media has only reported part of the interaction.

“You can’t live your whole life behind your phone, bro,” Lawrence told the reporter. “You can’t do that, you’ve got to live in the now.”

The Joy mocked the journalist for bringing up the Oscars during the press conference. “We’re at the Golden Globes,” she said in response. “If you put your phone down, you’d know that.”

But Hathaway wants the media to ease its portrayal of Lawrence. “Jennifer is a beautiful, talented, wildly successful, popular, FOUR TIME OSCAR NOMINATED young woman,” she continues. “Please let us not punish her for these things.”
