The governments of the United States and Cuban governments have agreed to reinstitute scheduled air service between the two nations.

It is hoped the deal could jumpstart economic relations between the two countries, paving the way for thousands of visitors to the island on a daily basis.

However, there is as yet no timetable for flights to begin.

The deal, announced exactly one year since president Barack Obama and president Raul Castro announced a historic détente, is the most significant business development yet during the ongoing thaw.

American airlines will now open negotiations with the Cuban government over commercial flight routes and schedules.

Before the deal, only chartered flights could fly people between the US and Cuba.

Following the announcement, United Airlines issued the following statement which read: “United Airlines congratulates the United States and Cuban governments on reaching this historic arrangement, which will strengthen ties and economic development between the two countries.

“We look forward to offering service between our global gateways and Cuba as soon as we have approval to do so.”
