Ronda Rousey Wants To Play As Samus In A Live-Action Metroid Movie

This article is more than 8 years old.

While there’s no news of Nintendo doing any groundwork for a live-action Metroid movie, it seems Ronda Rousey wants a shot at playing Samus Aran anyway.

In a recent interview with the mixed martial arts fighter, Mat Paget of Gamespot managed to get Rousey to enthuse for her love of Metroid. As she says, “I've always wanted to be Samus. That would be badass. I love how people found out later that it was a hot chick on the inside. And then most of the day you're in a suit, so you can just hang out and eat donuts and be the star of Metroid. I hope they make a movie out of that.”

Now, the only real time we’ve ever had a live-action depiction of Samus Aran was in the initial PR build-up for the original Metroid Prime on GameCube.

One advert in particular showed Samus traversing an alien world and using her various abilities before taking on a boss (shown below).

What really struck me at the time was how it was actually quite believable and made me think that a live-action Metroid movie could work.

Anyway, Rousey is clearly a wonderfully massive nerd. Not only is she a big Dragon Ball Z fan, with Vegeta being her favorite character, but she also clearly loves Metroid too.

Personally, I am glad people like Rousey are open about the fact they enjoy stuff like anime and games. While many celebrities obviously play games or watch anime, they are reticent to talk about that publicly. Likely over the fact they could be derided for their pastimes.

In Rousey’s case though, I doubt many would deride her for enjoying Metroid. Well, I mean they could…once, but she is an adept mixed martial arts fighter. Mocking what she enjoys would probably not be all that conducive for anyone’s continued health.

I think Rousey would make a good Samus though. She broadly looks like the character and clearly knows the host work well enough. My only real worry with a Metroid movie is how Hollywood would mess it up.

In any case if a Metroid movie is to happen anytime soon, Rousey definitely has my full approval.
