Today marks the debut of the Evo 2014 fighting game tournament in Las Vegas, but those who didn't book airfare to the City of Sin won't be entirely left out thanks to a bevy of broadcast streams covering all the virtual fisticuffs. Eight top fighting games are officially represented at Evo 2014: Ultra Street Fighter 4, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, The King of Fighters 13 and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Capcom's official "Capcom Fighters" stream on Twitch has you covered for all the Ultra Street Fighter 4 matches, while Shoryuken offers two streams to cover the remaining games: SRKEvo1 and the similarly-titled SRKEvo2. The official Twitch streaming schedule offers a full rundown of what games will be shown. Today is a dominated by Ultra Street Fighter 4, Tekken and Injustice, but tomorrow features the more esoteric King of Fighters, Killer Instinct and BlazBlue tournaments. [Image: Capcom]

  • Europe's getting a 5-game Vita Slim bundle this summer

Sony's bringing a new Vita Slim bundle to Europe in June, this time with codes for a quintet of games. The famous five are Injustice: Gods Among Us, God of War: Chain of Olympus, PlayStation All-Stars, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and Killzone: Liberation. You'll see it's subtitled the "Action Mega" pack, but with those games we'd call it "Not for Pacifists." The eagle-eyed of you will have spotted two of those games are for PSP rather than Vita - that's God of War and Killzone - and we'd prefer to see Killzone: Mercenary in there. In any case, the 200 euros bundle also chucks in a much-needed 8GB memory card. As for which countries, the pack's confirmed for Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, UK, Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland, France, Greece, Poland, Russia, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Spain. There's no word yet on a concrete release date. [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe]

  • Celebrate one year of Injustice iOS with multiplayer combat

For a mobile adaptation of a hit fighting game, the iOS version of Injustice: Gods Among Us has always lacked one crucial component: multiplayer combat. Now, one year after the game's debut, that flaw has been amended. Keep in mind, this multiplayer addition isn't quite what you'd expect from a one-on-one fighter. Instead of real-time combat, Injustice players will send teams of their favorite Heroes and Villains to battle other people in the form of AI-controlled opponents. The winner of the match is awarded Multiplayer Points which are then tallied at the end of each "Weekly Leaderboard Season." The players with the highest point totals will then be awarded "tiered rewards," though neither Warner Bros. nor developer Netherrealm Studios has revealed what those rewards might be. Alongside the multiplayer mode, this update also adds additional gold characters, new missions, and increases each character's level cap. Those playing Injustice on Android devices won't entirely be left out, but will be waiting until sometime in May to receive this new content. [Image: WBIE]

Microsoft is cleaning out its digital shelves with a sizable sale on Xbox 360 games and add-ons this week. Ending April 21, the sale spans 11 games and hundreds of pieces of DLC. Five of the games feature popular DC comics superhero Batman in some capacity, such as 75 percent off both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City through Games on Demand ($4.99 / £3.74 / 4.99 euros each). Additionally, Injustice: Gods Among us is half-off ($19.99 / £17.49 / 24.99 euros), Lego Batman 2 is 67 percent off ($6.59 / £4.94 / 6.59 euros) and XBLA game Gotham City Imposters is 75 percent off ($3.74 / £2.49 / 3.59 euros). All of the above deals are valid for those with a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. Among the other games on sale for all Xbox Live users is Saints Row 4, which is half-off this week ($14.99 / £12.49 / 14.99 euros). Three other games are discounted through Games on Demand: Borderlands 2 is 65 percent off ($6.99 / £6.99 / 10.49 euros), Lego Marvel Super Heroes is 33 percent off ($33.49 / £30.14 / 43.54 euros) and Prototype 2 is 75 percent off ($9.99 / £4.99 / 7.49 euros). Lastly, XBLA games Pac-Man Championship Edition DX+ is half-off ($4.99 / £3.37 / 4.74 euros) and Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD is 33 percent off ($13.39 / £10.71 / 13.39 euros) for the week. EVO fighting game tournament founder Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar appeared on a recent episode of iPlayWinner's The Fray, where he revealed that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 would appear at this year's tournament. As we reported in September, EVO 2014 is slated to take place in Las Vegas from July 11 to July 13. As with last year, EVO 2014 will be streamed via Twitch. Though it's not terribly surprising to see the fan-favorite Tekken Tag Tournament 2 join the tournament roster, it's far from the only draw at EVO 2014. Other games appearing at the event include Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters 13 and BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma. Alongside the addition of Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Cuellar also revealed that publisher Bandai Namco has signed on as a sponsor for EVO 2014. [Image: Bandai Namco]

  • EVO 2014 line-up announced, Super Smash Bros. Melee being discussed

    02.10.2014

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is one of six confirmed games for this year's Evolution Championship Series, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is a doubt. Event organizer Shoryuken revealed it's in "preliminary discussions" with Nintendo about featuring the GameCube brawler in the fighting game tournament, following the stir its inclusion caused last year. Melee was the eighth game to be included in last year's line-up, after it won a fan vote that raised $225,724 for breast cancer research. However, a few months after Nintendo moved to claim revenue on Let's Play videos featuring its games, the company requested Melee be removed from the EVO 2013 streaming line-up. The move was received with an immediate backlash, and Nintendo swiftly reversed its decision. The circumstances are different this time-around. For one, Melee is just another potential game in the line-up, not one voted for by fans with charity money behind it. Still, it'll be interesting to see which way Nintendo swings on approval this time, especially in the same year that a new Super Smash Bros. game is set to arrive on Wii U and 3DS. As for the rest, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Killer Instinct, and Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma join Ultra Street Fighter 4 as newbies to the championships, while King of Fighters 13 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 return from last year's selection. The event itself takes place on July 11-13 at the LVH Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, but if you can't make it to Nevada you can always tune in on Twitch. [Image: Shoryuken]

  • Killzone, Knack and other PS4 game deals at Best Buy

A $60 game is an expensive proposition, but you knock $20 off the price and things get tempting. Best Buy is looking to do just that with a PS4 launch game sale and is offering up Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall for $40, with free shipping on all orders over $25. Best Buy is also knocking some ducats off Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 (both the Standard and Limited editions) and Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition. All of these games are available for $50 with free shipping. While we'd have a hard time suggesting Knack for any price, Killzone: Shadow Fall is a tempting deal. In our review, we said Killzone: Shadow Fall has some interesting sci-fi moments but is ultimately a game residing on "the border between good and great."

  • Best of the Rest: Alexander's picks of 2013

Joystiq is revealing its 10 favorite games of 2013 throughout the week. Keep reading for more top selections and every writer's personal, impassioned picks in Best of the Rest roundups. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is this year's Far Cry 3, which coincidentally happened to be my top game for Best of the Rest in 2012. Both games launched so late in the year and were saddled with incorrect expectations that it wasn't until folks actually played it en masse that the word on the street began to turn. It turned too late, once again, as is the case with Black Flag, which does feature the same incoherent storytelling that made Assassin's Creed 3 such an abomination, but finds redemption in what AC3 was lacking: a game. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag has that element I define in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood – which up to this point was my favorite installment of the franchise – as ABD (Always Be Doing!). Snap your fingers and there's another thing to grab or stab in Black Flag. Add to that the fuller realization of the sailing mechanics introduced in the previous game and Black Flag is primed to be a full-blown pirate spin-off. Black Flag is Sid Meier's Pirates! for a new generation and I certainly hope this isn't the last we see of it. What hurt Black Flag were the Assassin's Creed tropes, and it would be best for both to sail in separate directions from here.

Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition, which includes last year's critically acclaimed fighter and all its downloadable content, will smash retail walls on November 12 and 29 in the Americas and Europe, respectively. The super-powered spectacle is priced at $59.99 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PS4, $49.99 for PC and $39.99 for Vita. And yes, you saw that right: a PlayStation 4 version but nothing for Xbox One. Curious. There are also 40 more character skins, 60 S.T.A.R. Labs Missions and – for American copies – a soundtrack to boot.

  • Injustice: Gods Among Us patch 1.06 brings free Zod 'Man of Steel' skin

Injustice: Gods Among Us invites patch 1.06 to join its ranks on October 1, bringing in a range of balance adjustments and gameplay fixes. Also dropping tomorrow, for free, is the Man of Steel skin for Zod. Fixes impact most of the characters in Injustice, with a notable amount of tweaking for Black Adam, Zatanna and Flash. With patch 1.06, Black Adam's Lightning Strike only hits grounded opponents when performed outside of a combo, his back-dashing covers less ground, the duration of his Orbs of Seth power is reduced and its cool-down increased, and he has an improved hit advantage with the Eye of Horus combo. The hitbox on Flash's Flying Uppercut has been improved and Zatanna no longer has an infinite combo against larger characters. Check out the hefty list of patch 1.06 fixes below.

Warner Bros. may be planning a Vita port of DC fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, if a new classification is accurate. As Siliconera spotted, German ratings board USK has a Vita version listed as of September 6. This isn't the first time a Vita port has cropped up; as PlayStation LifeStyle reports, Amazon France listed a Game of the Year edition in the summer for PS3, Xbox 360, and the Vita. When approached about the USK rating, a Warner Bros representative told us, "We have no comment." Injustice, developed by Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm, landed on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U back in April. It notched four and a half stars in our review, Jordan saying "its dark thematic overtones and mature ideas explore the psychological dangers of power, the temptations of absolute authority and the effects of grief on the psyche of metahumans, all while delivering a polished, thrilling fighting game experience." Update: Brazil's rating board (via @lifelower) lists Injustice GOTY for Xbox One, PS4, and PC as well as Vita and the three original platforms of PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Eyebrow raised, Injustice, eyebrow raised.

The mobile game companion to NetherRealm Studios' superhero fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us, will reach the Android platform this fall, according to a tweet posted to the official Injustice Twitter account. The mobile game offers a touchscreen-based fighting experience that complements its Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts, unlocking costumes and bonus content within the console incarnation. Though the iOS version of Injustice is a free download, it features microtransactions that speed the process to unlock content, including characters. NetherRealm has offered no price point for the Android game, but it's likely to follow the same business model.

The latest DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us, magician Zatanna Zatara, is available for download on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network today for 400 MS Points ($5). If you're unfamiliar with the sometime Justice Leaguer, the catch-up trailer above hits all the backstory beats you'll need before jumping into the fight. NetherRealm Studios has yet to announce whether there will be more DLC characters after Zatanna.

    08.07.2013

Well that was quick! It's barely been a week since Martian Manhunter began floating around the war-torn, interactive stages of Injustice: Gods Among Us, and NetherRealm Studios has already announced the game's next DLC character: Zatanna Zatara. What's more, Zatanna is being released next Tuesday, August 13, for 400 MS Points/$5 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively. As always, the announcement made no mention of Zatanna's potential/eventual availability on the Wii U version of the game. Zatanna's in-game abilities appear appropriately magical, with her playstyle seemingly split between melee rushdown and top hat/wand-based zoning. We find it interesting that NetherRealm decided to base her look off of her classic appearance, rather than her New 52 regalia, since the majority of characters in Injustice have taken their design cues from DC's current generation. Who knows, though – maybe her alternate costume has some pants.
