Now, let’s get one thing out of the way right off the bat: pin and tumbler locks are only so effective. Any time we see a service that wants to copy keys, there’s an inherent worry that it might be used for nefarious purposes. What if your neighbor decides to make a copy of your key? What if someone hacks the company’s servers and steals the keys and then comes to your house? While it makes sense to worry, there are also very few situations where using an app like this to copy keys is easier than just stealing the key itself, picking the lock, or breaking a window. And it’s certainly easier than hacking a remote server just to download a key to some random person’s house somewhere in the country and take a home invasion road trip. Still, if you’re worried, you can at least use this is an object lesson for how easy it is to bypass common pin and tumbler locks.
For everyone else, the service is pretty easy to use. You simply take a picture of the key, off the key ring, from both the top and bottom. Preferably on a white sheet of paper. You can then store this image for later. You can place a mail order with KeyMe for any keys you need over the long term. However, if you need one pronto, and you happen to have a KeyMe kiosk nearby, you can take a trip down to the store to get yourself a replacement made when you need it.
