Boston Police Find Driver In Fatal Bike Accident That Killed Surgeon

Boston police say they've found the driver and tractor-trailer truck involved in an accident that killed a bicyclist.

Police announced Friday night that they had located the driver and the truck that kept going after the accident, but didn't elaborate. Authorities said the accident remains under investigation and no charges had been filed. The driver's name wasn't released.

Authorities say Anita Kurmann, 38, was hit while riding her bike at around 7 a.m. Friday at Beacon Street and Massachusetts Avenue. She was pronounced dead at a Boston hospital. Kurmann was an endocrine surgeon from Switzerland, who had been working in Boston for three years at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston University.

The Boston Globe published a statement from Darrell Kotton, the director of BU’s Center for Regenerative Medicine where Kurmann was a postdoctoral research fellow in his lab.

In an excerpt from the statement, Kotton writes:

Anita brought out the best in all of us, and indeed was herself unanimously beloved and regarded as exemplary in all that she did; she was intelligent, well-read, hard working, creative, and a trusted friend. Anita dedicated her life to her patients and her work, believing that her role as a surgeon scientist could most help those who suffer from thyroid diseases. She trained hard to be the best surgeon and researcher she could be, and she reported that completing her co-first authored manuscript representing her years of research in the CReM was one of her happiest and most proud moments.

Authorities released surveillance images of the flatbed tractor-trailer after the accident in an effort to generate tips.

Investigators said they weren't sure if the driver was aware that the truck had hit the bicyclist.
