Rate this book
After the world was ravaged by a viral apocalypse, Blackwater is one of the only colonies that remains. The survivors came together to create this safe haven. Nestled between a fierce river and a city’s flood wall, the well-being of its residents hangs on a long-established treaty with the night-walkers. Sounds simple enough, but lately, the people of Blackwater have been dying, and the humans believe the night-walkers are to blame.

Porschia Grant starves for more than her parents’ affection. Forced to enter the rotation, she will be given extra food rations in exchange for becoming a vampire’s breakfast and dinner for a week. The rotation has an extra responsibility as well: leave the colony and enter the dangerous forest to hunt for food. A night-walker will protect the hunters from the infected that roam the woods. But with the treaty hanging in the balance and tension between the humans and vampires rising, anything could happen in the darkness.

What would you do if your only chance at survival might kill you?

RONE Award-winning author Casey Bond lives on a rural farm in West Virginia with her husband and their two beautiful daughters. She writes phoenixes – gloriously flawed and morally gray characters that fiercely rise from the ashes of their circumstances.

Worldbuilding is one of her favorite pastimes. She thinks thunderstorms are better than coffee and that watching a meteor shower is the closest thing to magic you might ever see. She’s a firm believer that every amazing book needs a world you want to wrap yourself in, a character you want to win, and a love you would fight for.

Vampires and infected humans that seem to be not much more than zombies. This was different and pretty good. I won't be reading the next book right now because I'm too upset about what happened to the heroine at the end. If I had a mother like this heroines mom, it would have been bye bye moms, you ain't worth a hill of beans.

A viral catastrophe leaves Blackwater Colony in peril. Humans must watch out for the Infected roaming around town waiting to sink their teeth to eat them. A Rotation is held weekly to get enough food ration to starving families.

Porschia Grant is heartbroken when her sister Mercedes doesn't make it back from Rotation and is now considered an Infected. Mercedes was their mother's favorite child, and she blames Porschia for her sister's tragic ending. There's so much that Porschia yearns from her mom - food, love and attention, but she's not getting any of it despite all her sacrifices for her family. There's two things she needs to do before her time runs out - get married or join the Rotation.

There's a treaty between the survivors and the night - walkers to help keep the place safe and secure. All it takes is to let vampires feed from them every night in exchange of food rations. But when two murders are discovered in a river, humans are quick to blame night walkers.

I love love love this book and I want to smack myself for not reading it sooner. Frenzy got me all frantic and frenzied and fainting. Casey Bond is such a wicked story teller.

I love so many things about this book. Where do I begin? Well, there's the brave and truly admirable Porschia, who has suffered so much and continues to struggle with her new life by the end of the book. There's Saul, dependable and loving and selfless Saul. I love this man, he's got a good head on her shoulders and a good gentle heart. I couldn't imagine anyone else perfect for Porschia.

And there's the night-walkers, Roman and Tage. Honestly, these blood sucking entities intrigued me. Their hot and cold attitude doesn't only confused Porschia and me, but literally gets me on the edge, and I actually can't force myself to hate them.

Then there's kind-hearted Mrs. Maggie Dillinger and little brother Ford who's making me believe that humanity is still not lost in a colony of infected and undead.

Casey Bond breaks the norm when it comes to love triangles and paranormals. To be specific, there is a triangle that happens to the main characters in the book, but you don't feel that happening because the heroine knows what's good for her. I love how feisty and headstrong Porschia is. Katniss Everdeen could learn a thing or two about this young survivor.

I can't further articulate how awesome this book is. It's so different from all other paranormal books I've read before. Frenzy is intense and heart-pounding and hair-raising. I'm not surprised when I learned that the author recently received numerous awards for the books she'd written. Casey L. Bond is the bomb! This is one of the best series I've read from her so far! I can't wait to read book 2, Frantic!

I had trepidation beginning this book. I'm not a fan of vampire books but a huge fan of "zombie" books and I have read a lot of both. I am so glad I did read this! Casey did such an amazing job of twisting the zombie and vampire genre into a smooth, seamless and imagination filled story.

This book is one of my absolute favorites! I devoured it in one evening and now I am going insane waiting to know what happens next.

I have read quite a few books by author Casey Bond. I love the originality of her stories and the fact that I never know where she will go with each character or the plot. I have many times slammed my kindle shut and wanted to pull my hair out at some of the craziness that comes from her mind. LOL That's what makes her work so exciting to read and the fact that her charcters always have substance to them. Frenzy is no exception. The ending left my jaw hitting the floor!
"Now that he'd tasted eternal life, did he crave the empty solace of death?"

In the colony of Blackwater where Porschia lives, there are mysterious deaths that are being blamed on the night-walkers. Fears are high but the need for food is more pressing. Porschia must be strong and volunteer to go on rotation to bring in food from outside the walls. Not only does she have to be escorted by a night-walker, but beyond their safe haven are the infected that only care about eating the flesh of humans. I love that the story has both vampires and undead, zombie like creatures. Danger comes from all directions in this action packed story.
"When life was so fragile, and survival so difficult, rushing seemed like the thing to do."

Another thing that makes this book so great is the poetic way the author writes. Her words and descriptions flow so nicely. I could visualize the colony and the devastation outside the walls. I felt as if I was there watching everything transpire and not sitting reading a book on my sofa.
"Standing alone near the water's edge, I watched the swirling torrent just beneath the falls and let the rush of the water fill my ears."

An exciting story with a kick ass leading female character. I can not wait to read book 2 and 3, but until then I am already rereading Frenzy. It's that fangtastic! I highly recommend this book!

Holy mother of cliffhangers Batman. Fuck this blows. But apart from that, I loved it.

**Mild Spoilers**

There are a couple things I don't understand, however:

How does a colony of about 200 residents not know everyone fairly well? Especially since it is an "island" without new people coming and the old leaving?

Why don't they raise the kids to hunt so that it becomes a common skill? It would give those who are chosen for the rotation a better chance of bring food home.

Why don't they also raise the children to know a trade/trades from a young age? That way everyone has a secure future, and the colony would benefit greatly.

The hype around this book is what pulled me in and then constantly seeing it everywhere in my feeds is what pushed me to finally buy my own copy. With that being said I’m sad to say that I wasn’t head over heels about it. Yes, the story pulled me in and kept me interested but it just wasn’t quite what I had in mind. I think one of the big reasons why I feel kind of meh about this book is because of certain things not being told to us like, how did night-walkers reveal themselves to the world? How did the virus begin? What year is it? All I know about this stuff is that the world ended around eighty years ago. I would love to learn more of how this world ended beside that the virus happened and once it was over the ones that survived went back to the city to burn it down to make sure the virus couldn’t infect anyone else.

I think another thing that affected my enjoyment was the writing style. It was fast. The storyline was fast, the relationships moved fast, how Roman takes one look at Porschia and is like “She’s mine, no one else’s” and I kind of rolled my eyes at that. Like I don’t mind that the story was fast, it keeps you on your toes, but I felt like some things could have moved slower, have a better build up so I could have connected more to the story and characters.

But other than that, it was a decent read. The story went a different way than what I expected from reading the summary but that ending definitely surprised me. That alone makes me want to read the next book.

First off I have to say that I couldn't put this book down! The story pulled me in from the start. The characters had depth and the story line flowed beautifully. The book sent me on an emotional roller coaster and the twists and turns in the plot always surprised me.

I have to say that Casey L. Bond not only is an extremely well story teller, but is incredible in her way of bringing the story to life. You can actually feel as if you are there in the story with the characters and you can feel all of the emotions that each character is representing in this awesome story. I could visualize the colony and the devastation outside the walls. I felt as if I was there watching everything transpire.

In the colony of Blackwater where Porschia lives, there are mysterious deaths that are being blamed on the night-walkers. Fears are high but the need for food is more pressing. I love that the story has both vampires and undead, creatures. Danger comes from all directions in this action packed story.

An exciting story with a kick ass leading female character, and some pretty intense night-walkers. Need I say, hot intense night-walkers. I'm sitting here having a book hangover where I need book 2 fast. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here! Get ready for a wild ride.

I think my heart is still beating out of my chest. Frenzy is an exhilarating thrill-ride in a unique post-apocalyptic world filled with dangerous beings. Some are unable to control themselves and others barely keep themselves from helping themselves because they have a treaty with the humans.

The world Porschia lives in is harsh, cold, and difficult to live in. Even her own mother despises her. I can't even fathom having my mom hate me...it hurt my heart for poor Porschia!

One of the only ways to get extra meal portions is to volunteer for the rotation. In exchange for some blood, you gain protection from the nightwalkers while you hunt for food for the village (Nightwalkers are immune to the Infected roaming the woods outside the settlement).

Casey L Bond creates amazing characters who you can either relate to, love, or hate as they develop throughout the book. I appreciated that even though Porschia wasn't overly moody and pitiful. She was ready to do what was necessary to survive even if she didn't have much more hope for a future other than taking one day at a time. I finished this book in one day, because I couldn't put my kindle down to live my life outside of Frenzy.

I received an ARC in exchange for an Honest Review...

I finished reading Frenzy 2 days ago and I can't get it out of my mind.. I NEED to know what happens next!! Frenzy is an Amazing start to what I'm sure will be an EPIC series by Casey Bond. How can you go wrong with a story that has both Vampires and the Infected in it.

The Colony has a treaty with the Vampires who have sworn to protect the humans from the infected in exchange for allowing the vamps to feed off of them.. The treaty is in jeopardy though. People are being killed.. But by who? (I would definitely love to know.)
Porschia is forced into the rotation because of her hateful mother.. (OHHH I hate her..) She has now caught the eye of more than just a man and they all want her... Saul, the human.. Roman and Tage, both Vampires.... Who can she trust.. (I'm trying to figure that out) With things getting more dangerous by the day, Porschia will have a choice to make... One that will change everything..

I can't wait to read the next book.. I have so many questions and theories rolling around in my head..

I was going to give this 2 stars, but it ended a solid three. It had the potential to be so much more, but it fell flat in a few ways.

First, the book is based post zombie apocalypse...with vampires. Hell yea, amirite? People in a horrible world, just trying to survive with the help of a treaty with Vampires to protect them on their hunts in return allowing the vamps to feed on them.

The storyline was good, rather enjoyable actually. But at times the writing felt juvenile...I was certain it was the authors first book (but it's not, I checked.) The relationship between characters were rushed: there wasn't a slow build for any of them. No descriptions of characters, memories to play off of, just a rush to get to where the story wanted to go. It really could have used...more. More for the reader to relate with. Just more in general.

The ending was rushed, and didn't make a ton of sense, but there's still enough promise and intrigue in the story that it's a read worth reading (very short, almost novella feel to me) and I already bought book 2.

Mama's Thoughts:

Just when you think you've got it all figured out.....you don't. Casey L. Bond wields words like a weapon, though a bit more delicate at times than others, drawing you in to her world so completely that you can barely breathe by the time you're finished. You'll come up for air and be begging for the next book once you've finished Frenzy. I certainly can not wait to find out what happens next and to have some questions answered. Part post apocalyptic nightmare, and part blood curdling horror, with a dash of romance, Frenzy has me needing a warm blanket and a hug. This is not your momma's feel good story time. This is dark and gripping, and ultimately one ride that I would definitely pay to take again.

Frenzy is the first book I have read by this author and I really loved it. This book had plenty of action and excitement but it's best part is the character building. The author is very good at creating captivating characters that I cared about. The combination of zombies and vampires was well done though I hope there will be more zombies in the future books. The pace of the book was well done and the book never dragged. The book was short and left me wanting more in a good way. The ending was a surprise and I enjoyed it. I can't wait until the next book comes out. I highly recommend this excellent story.

READ THIS BOOK IF:

You’re into The Forest of Hands and Teeth, The Village, Rot and Ruin, The Coldest Girl in Cold Town and/or The Immortal Rules
Zombie-dystopia-vampire crossovers make you want to jump for joy
Triangles make you happy

Frenzy is that perfect read to curl up with on a cold, stormy night with a cup of hot chocolate and all the lights on in the house. Creepy, engaging, and mysterious, Frenzy is definitely a book you’ll read in one sitting.

Good but not great

This book didn't hold my attention as thoroughly as I would have liked. While it had a different concept to other vampire/human/other books I've read, something just didn't grab me.

After finishing RICHES TO RAGS I was in the mood for more of Bond’s great writing and fantastic storytelling. So when I remembered I had FRENZY on my kindle I quickly tracked it down and started on a marvelous adventure. I mean, it has not only vampires...but zombies as well. My favorites!!

I quickly and ravenously took in this book. I was reading at any spare moment I could find. When I finished I was kicking myself for not renewing my KU subscription late last night. I would have loved to have started in on it immediately. That is now being rectified as we speak. I have to know what happens next.

I was absolutely digging Roman in this book. And he is one of those characters that I am not sure I am supposed to like or not. He is a bad guy per the colonies thinking since he is a vampire. But he also comes off as a really good guy when he is around Porshia. At least I think so. There is some parts towards the end that has me even questioning all I had read prior. AHHH! I am so confused on how I should feel about him.

This was one heck of a read and I am about to start in on the next in the series tonight. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys apocalyptic/vampire/ zombie’ish stories. I know I do and proved it with how quickly I devoured it. It had me up late with it’s amazing plot and on the edge of my seat with that ending. 5 Stars!

What's not to love.....vampires, zombies, dystopian society.....this book has all of that and more!

I won't bother to restate the blurb on this book since you can read that for yourself. Porschia is a young woman, rejected by her B of a mother through no fault of her own. Porschia's sister, Mercedes has died (or maybe not) while in The Rotation, hunting food for the Colony. Porschia is blamed because it was her turn for the Rotation but was too anemic to go.

The mother makes Cruella de Ville look mild......I definitely wanted to kill her! I agree with some other reviewers that the characters seem to be very, very naïve about how things work and the world in general. But, that often seems to be the case in Dystopian books.

And, yes, the ending had me wanting to throttle several people (including the author!). But, the writing was good, the characters were wonderful and I now have to quit writing so that I can get started on the next book!

For a book with "Zombies" it was not like that at all.

This book held so many emotions.
The MFC was amazing. She didn't let the grieve get to her.

How the Vampires in this series was plotted is amazing, and mysterious, and intriguing!

I can't believe how the book ended! I have to know more about all of these characters, Roman, Tage, Saul, Ford, MC's mother and father. I have to know it all!

This easily has become my next binge-read, and that is saying something because I haven’t binge-read a story in ages! I love the delicate balance between the unaffected humans, night walkers, and infected people. There are so few unaffected humans that walk a tightrope of survival. The people are starving and barely survive on limited resources. There is a treaty in place with the night walkers to keep them safe when they hunt, yet they offer themselves up as the night walkers’ dinner. This treaty is about to fall apart as mysterious deaths start occurring that are thought to be caused by the night walkers.
Also, I might add, that I sense a love triangle coming on between Porschia, Saul and Roman (or will it be Tage?)... We are left with a bit of a cliffhanger, so we shall see what is to come!

Interesting take on Zombies and Vampires.

What I Enjoyed:
-The isolated small-town zombie apocalypse setting. This always makes things high stakes and scary.
-The way zombies and vampires are portrayed in this book, and the fact that they both exist.
-The details on how things are described really put you into the setting and the story.
-The emotional trauma the character is going through. Not only is the main character Porshia dealing with a zombie apocalypse, but her sister has changed into one of them. Also, she is dealing with starvation and a mother who loathes her existence. It makes for one emotional ride, especially since she is the main characters head you are in.

What I Didn't Enjoy:
-For some reason I didn't really like Porshia right away. I am really not sure why, but I was annoyed with her a lot. I think I just wanted her to be a stronger character, but I think she will come into her own as the series goes.
-Nervous about the love interests. I don't really like Ford. I think I like Roman but not sure yet. Hope this one is a slow burn.

Although I only give these 3 stars, I did enjoy it overall. I will be continuing the series.

“Her pearly white teeth would yellow and chip off as she gnawed on blood and bone, sometimes animal, sometimes human, but always anything she could grab a hold off.”

This is a short dystopian book that see’s a survivor colony of humans partnering with vampires to fight the zombies that infect their friends and family, steal any available food and live just the other side of the river protecting Porschia and her family. To get extra rations for her family, Porschia enters the hunt, where she gives her blood to a vampire in exchange for his protection across the river and in the zombie forest in the hunt for food for the village. But people in Blackwater are dying and when suspicion is turned on the vampires, Porschia’s not sure what’s more dangerous, in the colony or out of it.

I don’t read a lot of dystopian, its not really my cup of tea but I had recently enjoyed Bond’s other book, When Wish’s Bleed, and I was interested to see what else she had to offer. Porschia’s family was interesting, similar to Bond’s other book, there was no maternal love just a load of crazy and the father was a vague observer. I did enjoy the sibling dynamic and I could really see them as complex characters, especially the inclusion of her younger brother Ford.

The love interest or whatever romance was sparking between Porschia and the guys (trying not to give spoilers here) was really confusing at points, as in I was unsure where any of it was going but maybe I just got mixed signals. And to be fair, at any sign of a love triangle, I’m known for just wanting to walk away.

There were some interesting turn of events and the setting was interesting, but it didn’t leap off the page at me like When Wish’s Bleed and it didn’t feel as developed as a similar book, The Immortal Rules. Still, I found the story likeable enough and I’m interested in the rest of the series (especially as there is- to warn you- a cliff-hanger) but I won’t go shouting it off the rooftops just yet.

My Thoughts:

As anyone who follows this blog will well know, I am a huge Casey L. Bond fan. Admittedly, I haven't read her entire backlog and just recently jumped on board the Bond Bandwagon, but even based on the few works I have devoured, I can say with confidence that she's one of the most talented writers I've worked with as of late. Her stories are full of gripping emotion and such vivid plots and settings that really leave a lasting impression on the mind of her readers.

Anyone who knows me also knows that I am absolutely obsessed with anything paranormal. And vampires? My favorite. Bring it on. But what happens when you miss the living dead with the undead? Can a novel with both vampires and zombies work in a post-apocalyptic setting? Hell yes. And so much more.

When it came to the plot of Frenzy, Bond really knocked it out of the park. It's extremely fast-paced and reads much like her previous Harvest Saga. A crippling dystopian future full of family struggles and more emotions than you can imagine, Bond crafted one of the most unique and original plots I have seen in quite some time. It was such an interesting twist on vampire lore that I couldn't devour it fast enough. Truly a testament to the power of Bond's writing talents.

The characters in Frenzy were more than intriguing. They are all well rounded and left me feeling whole and more than satisfied with their character arcs and development. Filled with plenty of unexpected moments, Bond was able to really dig deep into the psyche of her character, both mortal and paranormal, to provide her readers with exemplary examples of how the genre should be tackled.

The setting for Frenzy was probably my favorite aspect of the story. Maybe setting is the wrong word. Let's say tone. The story has this entire 'black and white' feel to it. It played out like a dark, Frank Miller-esque tone and setting that I could not get enough of. I had chills and could feel the tension in each scene Bond crafted. Truly a landmark in its' genre, Frenzy is a powerful beginning to a groundbreaking series.

Speaking of series? Let's talk about the potential of this one. Bond end the first novel with quite the bang. One I can honestly say I didn't see coming. I am so anxious to see where Bond takes this story and to see if she can continue to build the momentum as she has in Frenzy.

Look out Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer, you've got competition in a big way!

It should come as no surprise that I am granting this spellbinding read from Casey L. Bond a near-perfect 5-star review. It was everything I didn't even know I wanted, and then some! Don't miss your chance to pick up this read today. It's free for KU subscribers, what are you waiting for?! I know this guy cannot wait for more from Bond and this series!

Frenzy has been on my kindle for a criminally long time, I'd heard great things about the series but I wasn't really in a vampire mood; for a pretty long time I have to say. Having read and enjoyed a couple of vampire based stories of late I thought I would jump in.

I'm glad to say that it wasn't vampiretastic and there was a really great balance between humans, vampires, and infected that worked well. Vampires in an apocalypse is not a new scenario but as it's not done often it felt fresh as a storyline. Porschia is a great character, she is strong but with a lot of weight on her shoulders. Each day becomes more of a struggle for the colonists as fewer and fewer resources remain available - her sense of doing what's needed for the colony is high, driven partially by guilt but also by a need to escape her cruel mother, she does what is needed in dire circumstances.

The story moves pretty rapidly and the writing style is punchy, there are some great twists and you're never sure if you're rooting for the right person - so I just rooted for Porschia and the boys can fight it out between them! There is clearly something more to Porschia, all the vamps want to feed from her and there's a bit of alpha going on with it, but it's never too much for the story which carefully sidesteps the cliche. I was totally drawn into the world which left a lot to the reader to imagine, normally this is a bit of a no no for me but I think because of the fast pace, not becoming bogged down in lore worked well.

Where did it fall down for me then? Honestly, it felt like I had only read half a book by the end. So much had been done to build up the characters and situations but all that then felt like it was done to set up books in what is, I have discovered, a 6 book series. I had just become invested in the characters and then it ended on a cliffy just when the action got started. I have to say I felt a little cheated, which is such a shame as the story for me was going amazing places.

I would love to continue on with the series but I'm not sure at the moment that I'm up for a lot of short cliffhanger reads that I'll get to in a piecemeal fashion.  It's got amazing potential though and for that I will award 4*

Zombies and vampires in the same story—priceless!

The more I read by Casey L. Bond, the more I love her writing. “Frenzy” has to be one of my favorites, so far. I got a smash up of dystopian and paranormal all in one book and loved it!

The characters in “Frenzy” were splendid. Porschia (I love the different spelling) was strong, brave, and utterly determined. Her circumstances should have evoked pity in the reader. Instead, her willingness to stand up for herself made me applaud her. Shame on a parent who would treat their child in such a manner. Saul was a smart, loyal, and courageous young man. He realized Porschia’s strengths and respected and loved her for them. And then, there was Roman. He came across as wanting to do the right thing for everyone’s survival. But his admirable qualities had their dark side.

I appreciated how Bond wove in Biblical references. There was the ominous passage from Exodus in the beginning of the book. “Frenzy” is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a major illness wipes out a vast majority of the population. Quite similar to plagues which descend upon mankind to wipe out depravity. Saul’s name is a Hebrew name from the Bible meaning ‘asked for’ or ‘prayed for’. Porschia, when faced with an ultimatum, goes to the town’s church hoping to find a solution. Saul became the answer to her problem.

The details of the zombies were impressive, great visual and sensory images. I wouldn’t have wanted to run across one of the Infected. The smell alone would have helped me keep my distance.
The vampires Bond created did have traces of modern lore—swift motion, special rings, the ability to remain in daylight, compulsion. The concept of a rotation, however, put a fresh twist on the whole vampire storyline.

In “Frenzy” it’s not the zombies nor the vampires you should be afraid of. It’s a parent overwhelmed by grief who orchestrates a horrific event. Sometimes the monsters live at home.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this tale.

Frenzy by Casey L. Bond is a 4 star start to the apocalypse series involving a mix of zombies and vampires. The blend of the two worlds ends up amazing in this book.

In Frenzy, we are taken to Blackwater...one of the only places that humans are left to safety because of their location. While the rest of the world has fallen to a virus, this community is left u touched and protected by not only their natural surrounds, but vampires. They are called night-walkers in the story and have a treaty in place with the settlement: they will keep hunters safe when they leave to search for supplies and if they can't protect them from the zombies, or the infected as they are called, then they will turn them into vampires.

This story is from a local girl, Porschia Grant, who just lost her sister to the infected while she was out hunting. Porschia's family is having a hard time surviving and leave her with the choice to get married and have someone else feed her or join the group that hunts. She is torn up over the thought of leaving the safety of the settlement, but extra food is giving to those who go on hunts.

When she is waiting to make the cut into the group she lets it slip to her friend, Saul, that she needs to marry or join the group to hunt. The two make it into the group and not only does he let her know he would marry her if she will have him, but he will help any way he can. Some of it is just filling in the info about the hunts. Not only are they protected by the vampires, they are also the food for them. The two groups have been helping each other without many problems, but suddenly things are starting to fall apart. People are dying inside the settlement.

Porschia met Roman and the other vampires who are clearly playing dangerous games. The story takes a crazy twist that will leave you begging for more after info comes to light. Porschia's caught the attention of some of the vampires and he life is never going to be the same. In a world filled with so much death, can anyone make it out alive?
