Strengthening the grid with Community Microgrids

Led by the Clean Coalition, the Long Island Community Microgrid and Long Range Plan Battery Storage projects will deliver cost-effective energy storage.

Earlier this month, the Clean Coalition won a competitive solicitation to provide consulting services to the Public Service Enterprise Group of Long Island (PSEGLI) in support of the Long Island Community Microgrid Project and Long Range Plan Battery Storage Project.

Led by the CleanCoalition, these projects will deliver a cost-effective energy storage solution as the centerpiece to scale local renewable energy while enhancing power quality, grid reliability, and resilience across a vulnerable grid area in the East End of the South Fork.

An energy storage system – rated approximately 5 megawatt (MW) / 25 megawatt-hour (MWh) – will support higher penetrations of solar PV by smoothing variability during weather events and by mitigating peaks and steep ramps. This solution will also function with existing battery technologies enabling PSEGLI to operationalize the full capabilities of all battery systems in the target grid area in a manner that will guide subsequent renewables integration and grid management optimization.

Craig founded the Clean Coalition in 2009 and has over 30 years of experience in policy and technology innovation, including the proliferation of Solar Microgrids and Community Microgrids. Prior to founding the Clean Coalition, Craig held numerous positions in the wireless, semiconductor, banking, and renewable energy industries. Previously VP of Government Relations at GreenVolts, he was the first to successfully navigate a solar project through California’s Renewable Portfolio Standard solicitation process. Craig was energy policy lead on Steve Westly’s 2006 California gubernatorial campaign. His resume includes senior government relations, corporate development, and marketing positions at leading wireless, semiconductor, and banking companies such as Qualcomm, Ericsson, and Barclays Bank. Craig received an MBA and MSEE from the University of Southern California and a BSEE from the University of California, Berkeley.
