Bentley has released video of its Bentayga SUV model – the first in the company’s history – being put through its paces off-road in advance of its official unveiling at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show

The video was shot in Spain, while the car was undergoing testing at high altitude, undertaking some low-speed manoeuvres on a rocky off-road course.

The car featured in the video isn’t a finished version of the Bentayga, though: this is what’s known as a test mule, which is used to ensure all the mechanical parts and dynamic features of the car work as they should.

A new level of performance - Bentley Bentayga

The original concept car shown at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, as the EXP 9 F, was somewhat controversial, dividing opinion among critics and showgoers. We expect Bentley to address those criticisms and reveal a car at Frankfurt that will look significantly different and meet the aim of an ultra-luxury SUV that combines what the company calls “pinnacle luxury and performance”.

The Bentayga, which will go on sale in 2016, will be powered by a choice of W12, V8 and plug-in hybrid engines – which will be available in 2017 and will be capable of covering 30 miles on just battery power, in order to be ready for any metropolitan zero-emissions legislation to be introduced in the future.

As you’d expect from a Bentley, the cabin will be the height of luxury, but it will also feature the latest technology, including a driving mode selector that drivers control by touch, and which also incorporates the button for starting the engine.

The Bentayga will be built at the company’s factory in Crewe, where a new £280m R&D centre is currently under construction, which will employ 300 new staff, taking the headcount up to 1,300.
