Espanyol have appointed Constantin Galca as their new head coach after sacking Sergio Gonzalez on Monday afternoon.

Saturday's 1-0 defeat by high-flying Celta Vigo proved to be the final straw for the 39-year-old Spaniard, who leaves the Catalan side 12th in the table.

And the La Liga outfit have moved quickly to replace their former boss, drafting in an ex-Espanyol player in Galca, who has already started working with the team and will be presented on Monday evening.

A club statement read: "The coach chosen to take charge of the Espanyol first team is Constantin Galca.

"The Romanian coach will start this afternoon to lead the Blanquiazul squad in the training session which the team will have at the Power8 Stadium to prepare for Tuesday's Copa del Rey game against Levante.

"Calca has reached an agreement until the end of the season and will be presented today, at 2000 (local time), once his first training session has finished."

The 43-year-old ex-Steaua Bucharest coach, who will be accompanied at his press conference by club president Joan Collet and sporting director Oscar Perarnau, takes over an Espanyol side who have won just once in their last seven Primera Division matches.

Former manager Gonzalez, himself also a ex-Espanyol player, was promoted from the club's reserve side to replace Javier Aguirre in the first-team hotseat in May 2014.

A statement on the club website announced the sacking earlier on Monday, stating: "Sergio Gonzalez is no longer the first-team coach after the Espanyol board decided, in the last few hours, to relieve him of his duties.

"Espanyol want to thank Sergio Gonzalez for his dedication with the first team and wish him the best both professionally and personally."
