LCD Soundsystem to play Coachella, say reports

James Murphy will re-form LCD Soundsystem for a slot at the Californian festival, according to the New York Times

LCD Soundsystem could be set for a surprise comeback, with reports suggesting they are due to play California’s Coachella festival in 2016. James Murphy’s seminal electronic outfit have not played live since a farewell show at Madison Square Garden in 2011.

According to the New York Times, LCD Soundsystem will be coaxed out of retirement to appear at the festival, alongside another alleged surprise booking – a headline slot by Guns N’ Roses, featuring Axl Rose and Slash.

The news comes one week after LCD released their first new music in five years: the down-tempo ballad Christmas Will Break Your Heart appeared online on Christmas Eve.

Since disbanding LCD Soundsystem, Murphy has been busy in the food and drink business, opening a wine bar in Brooklyn and apparently eating so much fine food in London, Paris and New York that he gave himself gout.

According to the New York Times, there has been no comment from representatives of LCD Soundsystem. Earlier this year such rumours were shot down, with DFA Records label manager Kris Peterson saying: “Hey idiots, LCD Soundsystem isn’t reuniting. They’re dead, along with your good looks and cultural relevance.”

Murphy’s musical projects included covering David Bowie’s Golden Years for the film While We’re Young. Coachella is on 15-17 April and 22-24 April.
