Susannah Mushatt Jones, the world’s oldest person, has died at the age 116 in New York after a short illness.

Ms Jones, who said her long life depended on eating bacon and eggs every morning for over a century, died on Thursday night at a public housing facility for the elderly in Brooklyn. She was a member of the home’s tenant patrol until she was 106.

She was born in a small farming town near Montgomery, Alabama, on July 6, 1899: William McKinley was president of the United States and WG Grace had just played his final Test for England.

She never had any children and was married for only a few years.
