How to Disable the Onboard Graphics and Install a New Graphics Card in Your HP Pavilion 6630

The HP Pavilion cannot have the integrated graphics disabled in the BIOS. This can be frustrating if you are trying to do what the graphics card manual says.

Steps

  1. Turn your computer on and log on using Safe Mode. You can do this by pressing F8 repeatedly during boot up. You should come to a list of options; highlight Safe Mode using the up and down buttons, and press 'Enter' to select.
  2. It should pull up your graphics device (something like Intel Integrated Graphics).
  3. Disable it, don't uninstall it; otherwise, this will cause you a world of trouble.
  4. Plug your monitor cable into the new card, and when you log on, it should run on low resolution until the driver is installed. It should find the new hardware, and from here, follow the graphics card installation manual. Sometimes it has programs that install the driver and not the Found New Hardware Wizard.

If your version of the HP is a laptop, do not change graphics cards; it is set to a specified setting and optimization. If you know a lot about laptops and do manage to change a few things, remember to check compatibility.

Remove CMOS battery to let system reset. This looks like a large watch battery, may take some effort to remove it. Put back in after a couple minutes. May take a couple reboots to make things work again.
