In case you never attended a slumber party when you were in the second grade, tie-dye is when you take a plain white shirt, tie rubber bands tightly around sections of it, and then dip the fabric in different dyes to create a psychedelic colorful pattern. Tie-dyeing your hair applies a similar crafty concept.

In the video above, hair colorist Rickey Zito starts the process by tying off bleached hair in 2- to 4-inch-wide sections. Next, he continues to tie the rubber bands around the length of the ponytails 3 to 4 inches apart.

He then covers the hair ties with small fabric swatches to ensure the sections of hair underneath remain uncolored.

Zito then begins the coloring process by painting two shades of Pravana ChromaSilk Vivids Locked-In dye in each section and blending them together slightly for an even fade.
