Ready Player One release date moved to March 2018

When the Millennium Falcon lands, clear the deck.

With Star Wars: Episode VIII shifting to Dec. 15, 2017, Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One has now moved its debut off that date and will be hitting theaters about three months later, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday.

The film, based on author Ernest Cline’s sci-fi saga about a quest to solve a billionaire’s puzzle in a virtual reality world saturated with 1980s pop-culture nostalgia, will instead be released on March 30, 2018.

The studio announced a few other changes to its upcoming film lineup, much of it focused on making March 2018 into the start of the warm-weather blockbuster season. An “untitled WB event film” has been added to the schedule for just a few weeks before Ready Player One on March 2, and an unspecified DC Comics-inspired title (believed to be a big screen adaptation of The Flash) will drop on March 16. Elsewhere, Warner Bros. said it would release an untitled New Line “tentpole” on April 20, 2018.

Closer to the present, Alcon Entertainment’s Chicken Soup For the Soul has also been removed from the the path of Star Wars: Rogue One. That stand-alone visit to the galaxy is set for Dec. 16, the same day as the Alcon/WB movie — which will now be bumped to an unspecified date in 2017.

The move suggests a delay in that project rather than fear of the Force, since Warner Bros. is replacing it on that date with New Line/Village Roadshow’s Collateral Beauty, starring Will Smith, as a kind of counter-programing.
