COLUMBIA, SC (WCSC) - Goose Creek alum and former Gamecocks offensive lineman Brandon Shell was selected by the New York Jets in the NFL Draft on Saturday with the 158th overall pick in the 5th round.

Shell, who began his high school career playing at West Ashley before transferring to Goose Creek, started 47 straight games over the last four seasons for South Carolina. That's the second longest streak in school history. He also ranks 3rd in school history for number of starts.

Listed at 6'6 and over 320 lbs, Shell is expected to play at both left and right tackle in the NFL.

"We thought from a value standpoint where we took him was very good" said Jets GM Mike Maccagnan, who traded a 4th round pick in next year's draft to Washington to acquire the pick used to select Shell. "He's a big, long athletic offensive tackle who has the chance to potentially develop into a good backup, possibly a starter in time."

Shell is the great-nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Shell.
