The Body Shop Black Musk Eau de Toilette £18, The Body Shop stores and thebodyshop.co.uk

The latest addition to The Body Shop’s Musk fragrance collection is a dark, sensual scent that balances earthy black musk, liquorice root and patchouli with sweeter notes of vanilla, bergamot and marzipan, making it easily wearable every day.

It’s also 100 per cent vegan and, like all Body Shop products, cruelty-free.

Diptyque Essences Insensées Eau de Parfum £100, diptyqueparis.co.uk

With its retro bottle and old-fashioned atomiser, this perfume implies Hollywood glamour, but the scent is very much a modern one. This is all about jasmine, and two different harvests have been used to create the perfect blend, which opens with hints of basil.

YSL Black Opium Eau de Toilette

From £39, available nationwide

This is a softer, more feminine version of last year’s Black Opium eau de parfum. The key ingredient remains the same – coffee – but here it is combined with flowers, fruit and white wood for a more refreshing fragrance. The bottle is similar, too, but with a rose-pink glitter instead of black.

Dolce & Gabbana The One Essence From £65, Harrods and harrods.com

This elegant bottle of liquid gold will easily become a permanent addition to your dressing table. A little of this highly concentrated fragrance, which features bergamot and peach top notes, a heart note of white flowers and amber and vanilla base notes, goes a long way. It’s a classy, timeless perfume.

Giorgio Armani Privé Ambre Eccentrico Eau de Parfum£155, armanibeauty.co.uk

Amber is the key accord in this luxurious, woody perfume, which is complemented by powerful notes of cinnamon bark, tonka bean and patchouli. Not one for wallflowers, this is rich and spicy, and perfect for winter. The stylish black bottle is even capped with an amber lid.

Stella McCartney Stella Eau de Parfum From £42, available nationwide

The fashion designer’s signature scent has been given a revamp with slick new packaging and supermodel Lara Stone as its face. The perfume is Stella’s homage to an English rose, and sharp mandarin and a touch of amber complement the rose notes featured throughout. The result is a fresh, feminine fragrance.

Marks & Spencer Orchid Noir Eau de Toilette£16, M&S stores and marksandspencer.com

Like a floral fragrance but nothing too sweet or girly? Then look out for “florential” perfumes like this one, which blends rich black orchid with fresh pear, sweet vanilla and warming amber.

Marc Jacobs Decadence Eau de Parfum From £49, available nationwide

This is a much more grown-up offering than Marc Jacobs’ typically sweet and sunny perfumes, from the gold handbag chain on the bottle to the velvet box it comes in. Top notes are plum, iris and saffron, which develop into heart notes of rich Bulgarian rose and a base note of heady amber.
