LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 42-year-old man arrested for dragging his dog down the street with his car told police he did so to discipline the animal because the dog was not listening to him.

Timothy Sams, of La Vergne, was arrested Sunday after another motorist saw him dragging the dog and followed him to his home while recording the incident on his phone.

Responding officers were forced to wait outside for more than an hour because Sams refused to open the door.

He eventually came out of the home but resisted arrest as police took him into custody.

Sams was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and resisting arrest and booked into the Rutherford County jail where he remains on $8,000 bond.

The dog is currently in the care of PAWS in Murfreesboro. Supervisor Shea Davis said the dog, named C.J., is a 7-month-old Husky mix.

“[C.J.] had some skin missing from the paws, bottoms of his paws, back legs, a little under the belly,” Davis said.

An x-ray showed his paw was not broken, as authorities originally thought; it just swollen.

A second dog named Angel was also rescued from Sams’ home. Davis said Angel, a pit bull mix, did not have food, water, or shelter and was tied to a cinder block.

A fish was rescued from the home as well.

Davis said the animals would be available for adoption after a holding period of five business days.

She said C.J. has a very sweet personality despite the ordeal.

“You walk into his kennel and he wants to crawl into your lap, and he wants to lick you in the face. He’s very friendly, given what happened to him just the day prior,” Davis explained.
