This Video Explains Why You Should Talk Salary With Your Coworkers

Despite how troublesome the idea is, many of us still assume that discussing salary is either rude or potentially illegal. In most cases, it only hurts yourself and everyone in the company.

As the video above explains, discussing your salary isn’t illegal (and in fact, company policies that require you to keep your salary secret may themselves be illegal). In most cases it’s either shunned or just something that might piss off your boss. However, the consequences for breaking an apparent social norm are minor compared to losing your ability to negotiate. If you don’t know what your job is worth to your employer, you lose a lot of leverage when it comes time to negotiate a salary or a raise.

More importantly, the video above explains this concept in an easy to understand way. So, the next time you hear someone say that they can’t or shouldn’t discuss salary, you don’t have to send them to the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 to explain why that’s bad.
