Ciao, Bella Thorne! The April Cover Star's Interview Will Make You Laugh Out Loud
"I've always been flat-chested. It is only this year, at 17, that I started to develop boobs. I mean, finally!" says Bella Thorne, preparing to share an embarrassing story from her family's suburban Los Angeles home, where we're chatting. "I was working on a film, and they wanted me to look older. The wardrobe person was like, 'Put padding in your bra.' I'm walking on set. The director picked something off the ground and—in front of everyone—he goes, 'I think this fell out.' I was mortified. It was literally a pad from my bra."
A lot of young starlets pretend to be clumsy or awkward to seem relatable to fans, but this clothing malfunction is classic Bella—a five-foot-eight ball of awesome weirdness. This is the same girl who's admitted she got her period while on a date with her boyfriend. She also chipped his tooth on a paintball outing, but that's another story. Bella's willingness to put it all out there has brought her almost 6 million loyal Twitter followers (and more than 3.5 million on Instagram), and helped her transition from the star of Disney Channel's Shake It Up to a serious Hollywood force capable of sharing the screen with Drew Barrymore and Steve Carell. She's also a Neutrogena ambassador (alongside Kerry Washington and Jennifer Garner) who's taking her red-carpet game to the next level, thanks to stylist Johnny Wujek (he's dressed the likes of Katy Perry, Kate Mara, and Kim Kardashian). Shake it up, indeed.
It's early January when we talk, and Bella—who lives with her mother and brother, Remy, in a fancy, passcode-protected gated community in the Valley—is dressed in a high-waisted wax denim skirt from AllSaints and a ruffled Topshop blouse. She is sipping about a gallon of water from a bedazzled bottle. "It's my New Year's resolution to drink more water," she explains. Her sister Kaili is due back soon with Bella's favorite breakfast: a jalapeño-cheese bagel with capers, onions, cucumbers, and jalapeño cream cheese. "I love my jalapeños," Bella says. She also loves her neighborhood, citing a nearby Jamba Juice, a super convenient CVS, and a high-end grocery store.
Hearing our conversation, her moms calls from the kitchen: "You sound like a basic b****!" An eavesdropping mom? Stars—they're just like us! Bella laughs at her mom's commentary, probably because this is yet another embarrassing moment, but also because her life is far from basic.
