Over the past several weeks many Target stores across the US have been remodeling their stores. Aisles are now wider, some aisle have been shortened with new featured displays added, the electronics area had a major face lift and there are more interactive displays in many sections of the stores. Now some of these changes are starting to hit the toy departments as well.
Tonight, visiting my local Target store I spotted a new kiosk on the main aisle proclaiming that you can now “Become An Action Figure.”
The Super Awesome Me kiosk comes from 3D Plus Me, which has been seen previously as part of the GentleGiant ltd/3D Systems booth at San Diego Comic Con 2014.
The Super Awesome Me kiosk can help you produce a 12″ action figure of yourself in a Marvel or a Star Wars costume of your choosing. The kiosk takes your picture from one of two cameras, depending on height, and will map the image of your face onto the figure of your choosing. It will then show you a digital mock up of what you figure will look like before you complete your order. You enter in your mailing address and the figure will be created and then mailed to you, the kiosk does NOT print or produce the figure on site. The price for one custom 12″ figure is $59.99. The kiosk will print a reciept that you pay for at the front registers.
The kisok also features examples of each “costume” that is available with a child model’s picture that was used to create the figure.
The costumes/figures available for Marvel are: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Black Widow.
The costumes/figures available for Star Wars are male and female Jedi and classic Imperial Stormtrooper.
It was hard to see if the figures actually had articulation, but they looked to have at least 4 points of articulation. It was also not clear if the accessories were removable and if the masks moved to actually cover the faces.
Here is a short video of the “digital rough draft” when I tried it out last night:
The 3D Plus Me have a kiosk in the Times Square Toys R Us and there were plans to test them at some Sams Clubs in Los Angeles and Atlanta.
We don’t know yet how wide their installation will be in Target, but we have reached out to them to get more information. We will update as we learn more.

Great idea, just hope we get this over in the UK… also a shame you can’t get DC figures too.
sounds cool. though too bad one can’t have a option for dc figures too maybe if the thing becomes sucessful for target they will later add dc.
Hi,
Do you know which stores in Los Angeles has the Kiosks?
The target at Jefferson Blvd – has the kiosk – but it was not working correctly at the time. Maybe they fixed it?
[…] Action Figure Insider reports seeing a “Super Awesome Me” kiosk at a nearby Target. Using a camera and facial mapping tech, a person can have their picture taken by the 3D Plus Me kiosk, which can then be used to order the action figure of their choosing with their own face attached to it. It should be noted these figures are not produced by the kiosk, but the image and order are sent off-site and later shipped to the customer’s home address. […]

@TW: We have Super Awesome Me scanners at 24 Target stores in the Los Angeles area (full list here: http://3dplus.me/#find-us), at various events, and at the Toys R Us Times Square store in New York City.
@Alexander: We’re exploring many options for wider geographic exposure to customers and breadth of available characters.
@demoncat_4: We have interesting options coming in 2016 that might pique your interest more.
@Freddie Colon: That’s correct, the Super Awesome Me product line is in partnership with Hasbro so some of the bodies are custom versions of the Titan Series action figures while others are entirely new sculpts.
@dario2739: We aren’t in the UK with these products yet, but that will change shortly.
@Daniel Pickett: The masks for Spiderman, Captain America, and the Storm Trooper are all removable if you wish to display your character with the 3d-printed face wholly unobstructed. The mask for Ironman pivots on a hinge and can be removed completely if desired.

I did this at a local Walmart late last year/early this year, and wasn’t really impressed with the final product for the cost. I intended to use the head for a custom 1/6th scale figure of myself, but decided against it.
You are limited to the generic selection of hair, so it’s not a “true” 3D scan, and for adults with facial hair, it’s just printed in color, not actually sculpted. Granted, this is a mobile unit at a retail location, so you aren’t paying $200 or more for a high end digital scan and print, but final product still feels lacking.
Unless they have greatly improved the process, I would not recommend this, especially for a gift for a child, as the prints can chip.
HI, is it possible to send in a picture instead of going to the store? I would like to surprise my kids for Xmas with one.
This is pretty awesome. Thanks for letting us know about this!
I believe the Times Square TrU closed. Are there any other machines in NYC or NJ?
How long does it take to receive it? It’s going on 4 weeks and I still haven’t got it.
These techniques can’t replace other arts, such as photography can’t replace painting
Custom dolls are created from the beginning of history, it is clear that fighting the hyperrealism is complicated. But that is precisely the magic of craft
But hi-tech still amazing
You can order custom puppets here
