Become An Action Figure at @Target With SUPER AWESOME ME
November 7, 2015

Over the past several weeks many Target stores across the US have been remodeling their stores.   Aisles are now wider, some aisle have been shortened with new featured displays added, the electronics area had a major face lift and there are more interactive displays in many sections of the stores.   Now some of these changes are starting to hit the toy departments as well.

Tonight, visiting my local Target store I spotted a new kiosk on the main aisle proclaiming that you can now “Become An Action Figure.”

The Super Awesome Me kiosk comes from 3D Plus Me, which has been seen previously as part of the GentleGiant ltd/3D Systems booth at San Diego Comic Con 2014.

The Super Awesome Me kiosk can help you produce a 12″ action figure of yourself in a Marvel or a Star Wars costume of your choosing.   The kiosk takes your picture from one of two cameras, depending on height, and will map the image of your face onto the figure of your choosing.  It will then show you a digital mock up of what you figure will look like before you complete your order.   You enter in your mailing address and the figure will be created and then mailed to you, the kiosk does NOT print or produce the figure on site.   The price for one custom 12″ figure is $59.99.  The kiosk will print a reciept that you pay for at the front registers.

The kisok also features examples of each “costume” that is available with a child model’s picture that was used to create the figure.

The costumes/figures available for Marvel are: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Black Widow.

The costumes/figures available for Star Wars are male and female Jedi and classic Imperial Stormtrooper.

It was hard to see if the figures actually had articulation, but they looked to have at least 4 points of articulation.  It was also not clear if the accessories were removable and if the masks moved to actually cover the faces.

Here is a short video of the “digital rough draft” when I tried it out last night:

The 3D Plus Me have a kiosk in the Times Square Toys R Us and there were plans to test them at some Sams Clubs in Los Angeles and Atlanta.

We don’t know yet how wide their installation will be in Target, but we have reached out to them to get more information.    We will update as we learn more.

Daniel Pickett
AFi founder and Editor-In-Chief Daniel “Julius Marx” Pickett has been around toys his whole life. The first line he ever collected was Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes line back in the 70s. He has been surrounded by collectables ever since. In 1999 he was confounded by a lack of information and news about some of his favorite toy lines he was collecting. Since he couldn’t find the information he decided to pursue it himself thinking other people might also be interested in the same news. He started writing a weekly column on the toy industry and action figure for a toy news site and in a years time he tripled the sites daily traffic with his updates, reviews and product features. He built relationships with every major toy manufacturer and many sculptors, painters and mold makers. He grew his hobby into a world wide expertise that the industry has embraced. In 2004 he teamed up with his toy buddy Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and they created their own website www.ActionFigureInsider.com. Daniel has been quoted in both industry and mass media press outlets. Over the years Daniel and AFi have been sought out as experts in the field. Daniel was regularly featured on “Attack of the Show” on the G4 network as the primary contributor to their “Mint On Card” segment, and our front page has been linked to from USA Today’s “Pop Candy” Blog twice. Daniel’s content has also been featured on Bloomberg News, MSNBC.com, Time.com, The Wall Street Journal, The Saturday Evening Post, CNN.com, AssociatedPress.com Wired.com, Fark.com, Boing-Boing, Gizmodo.com, Ain’t It Cool News, the Official Star Wars blog, Geekologie, G4, CNet and Toy Fare magazine, among many others. He has consulted on toy lines, books, documentaries and TV shows. But all of that really just sounds snooty and “tootin’ his own horn” – the long and short of it is that Daniel loves toys and he LOVES talking about them.
