Toxic past and trust in Mad Max: Fury Road
The toxic pasts of Nux and Max become manifest in Slit catching up using Max’ Interceptor and endangering all of them. Check out this great post about details.
But it’s also Furiosa’s toxic past that strikes back in the very same scene. She gets stabbed in the ribs - not by just any random knife, but by the bone handled knife she hid in the drvier’s cab (excuse the pun, bonehandledknife). Someone here on tumblr had the theory it might be a bone of Furiosa’s mother (I don’t remember who had that idea, I’m sorry!). In any case, it’s a knife we first learn about because Furiosa mistrusts Max, is ready to kill him and later Nux with. It’s a knife she most likely crafted herself, it’s one of the many weapons she stores to kill people and probably already killed people with.
Unlike Max, who doesen’t kill until it’s necessary for survival, Furiosa in the bathing scene doesn’t hesitate to use that shotgun pointed at his throat, which turns out to be defect. Max on the other hand wastes several shots to intimdate her after he pinned her down. I think this is a turning point for Furiosa and part of the reason she trusts him so easily. There is a person who’d rather waste valuable bullets than shoot a opponent. Max is a person who does not kill.
So maybe all this has already been pointed out, but I saw Mad Max the third time today (after learning the DVD wont be out until december), and I wanted to write that down :)
“Slurs” and Seeing in Mad Max
I just can’t get out of my head how Slit calls Max “a raging feral”. He obviously considers himself and the war boys to be “civilized” in contrast to “feral”.
Slit of all people using words like “raging” and “feral” as slurs is very telling. He sees the muzzle on Max’s head and the hierarchy is clear to him, he does not question what he sees, he’s completely stuck in Immortan’s illusion.
In that way, Nux indeed IS a special war boy, although in many ways he isn’t. Nux questions what he sees. The focus is clearly on the visual aspect here, again. He sees Splendid getting under the car, he sees that Immortan sees his bloodbag drive the rig.

yeah I tried to be good and *not* spend those 2 hours on watching Fury Road, and technically I didn’t cuz I only listened to it while drawing this! I wanted to do a crosshatching exercise and took the opportunity to draw a frame from the movie, even though it’s techncially two frames meshed together cuz the War Boys never actually point all at the same time while showing their faces.
Aaaand I am not posting this to my art blog cuz this is not fanart polished and presented for your consumption, this is me rambling about stuff while I show you a pretty picture I made for fun. Feels somehow less performative if I post it here on my personal blog than over at my art blog, and I wasn’t even aware how much of a performance that actually was. I mean, it’s fun in some ways, but I also tightly control what I post there, so perhaps that’s the wrong approach to engage with fandom. idk, will have to think on that. This is me trying to figure it out until May when Furiosa hits cinemas and i HOPE fandom explodes again in a whirlwind of fire and gasoline (also on fire).
Back in 2015 I wanted to draw All The Film Stills from mmfr, and now I finally got to start on that.
For the nerds of you out there: Yeah, the gunner in the front is Morsov, Ace is in the far back looking over his shoulder. Also notice the kid in the mid ground who’s a bit slow on the uptake lmao
