Groom Has Seizure at Wedding, Bride Marries Guest Instead

It should have been a happy day for Jugal Kishore, 25, of Moradabad, India, and his bride-to-be, 23-year-old Indira, from Rampur.

Their wedding ceremony had been going fine up until the traditional varmala ceremony, at which point the groom places a garland on his bride. When the crucial moment arrived, Kishore unfortunately had an epileptic seizure, and fell to the ground before being rushed to a doctor by his relatives, the Times of India reports.

Indira, upset that Kishore’s family had apparently kept his condition a secret before their marriage, announced to the guests that she would go through with the ceremony and instead marry one of the assembled guests, according to the report. The lucky man, wearing jeans and a leather jacket, turned out to be one Harpal Singh, the bride’s sister’s brother-in-law

Singh accepted, and the couple proceeded with the ceremony, much to the chagrin of Kishore, who had returned to the wedding venue after being treated. He and his relatives tried to change Indira’s mind. “Spoons, plates and dishes became weapons as wedding guests tried to force the bride to change her mind,” the Times of India reports. They did not succeed, and police eventually detained a few guests.

All’s well that ends well, though: A police officer in Rampur told The Times that “Both families have amicably resolved the matter … The complaints have been withdrawn. Kishore and his family have now returned in peace to Moradabad.”
