Cashless Tolls Across the Tappan Zee Start April 23

The temporary cashless tolling facility across the Tappan Zee Bridge will go live at midnight April 23.

The state-of-the-art facility is located on the southbound New York State Thruway in South Nyack. Its gantry has been under construction for months.

Cashless tolling helps ease commutes, and this temporary one will help on the Tappan Zee Bridge, state officials say, as no one will have to slow down or stop at the toll plaza in Tarrytown.

This system will collect tolls at highway speeds via E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail, detecting classes of vehicles and applying the correct charge.

How it works:

• If you have E-ZPass, your toll is collected using the same process that you are already familiar with.
• If you don’t have E-ZPass, cameras photograph your vehicle’s license plate as it passes under the overhead equipment. A bill is then automatically sent to the registered owner by U.S. Mail.

You may have already experienced cashless tolling, going into New York City via the Henry Hudson Bridge.

Transportation authorities are turning to cashless tolling to reduce congestion, improve safety and reduce air pollution, state officials said. More than 35 bridges, tunnels and toll roads across the nation use cashless tolling, including the Golden Gate Bridge.
