The massive pile of trash and snow that long outlasted winter at a South Boston snow farm has finally melted.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced on Twitter that the pile, which at one point was five stories high, officially melted on Tuesday.
I'm pleased to announce the #BOSMeltNow challenge has come to a close, as the pile officially melted today, July 14. (1/3)— Mayor Marty Walsh (@marty_walsh) July 14, 2015
The city had invited residents to guess when this day would come back in June, and Walsh says he'll announce those winners on Wednesday. Aside from eternal glory, they'll be rewarded with a meet-and-greet with the mayor.
The snow had piled up after the city's Public Works department plowed more than 300,000 miles of road, using 114,113 tons of salt over a total of 210,692 hours spent removing an estimated 40,000 truckloads of snow from the city's streets.
The bill topped $6 million.
