The typical homeowner has seven items to tick off their “to do” list at any one time.

Around six per cent are waiting to tackle 20 tasks while almost three in four admit they delay vital jobs for at least four weeks.

And half of the 1,000 people questioned in a survey admit they do not do tasks around the house themselves at all, drafting in others to help instead. One in four calls in a professional while others rely on parents.

Male and female householders said a lack of confidence about DIY was their main reason for putting tasks off, the Ronseal survey revealed.

Kate Sitch, of Ronseal, said that the firm received more than 800 calls over the key spring and summer DIY seasons from people looking for help.
