3 Methods To Clean The Carpet In Your Home

A clean carpet is not only essential and aesthetically pleasing for any home but it is also vital in keeping your family and guests healthy. A lot of dirt, germs and bacteria could collect in an unclean carpet that could trigger allergies and respiratory problems. Meanwhile, a dirty and stained carpet could keep guests’ eyes toward it rather than the atmosphere at home.

Regularly cleaning your carpet also extends its life span. Contrary to reports that constant cleaning would leave the threads lose, it actually helps the rug to get a facelift and look new as dirt could weigh it down and render it looking old and outdated.

Fortunately, cleaning a carpet is quite easy. With the right tools and products, your home rug would be clean and looking new in no time.

With The Use of Vacuum Cleaner

The vacuum cleaner is one of the best ways to clean up your carpet especially if it’s just simple dust and dirt that have accumulated over the months. Frequent vacuuming of your carpet is necessary to prevent germs and other particles from collecting. While once a week is good enough, sometimes, you might need to do more depending on the foot traffic that walks across it.

1. First thing you need to do is to prepare the carpet for cleaning. Remove all things that are on top of it – move tables and chairs away, pick up toys and other stuff littered across it. The best way to vacuum a carpet is to completely leave it bare. This would also prevent any small thing from getting sucked up into the vacuum’s nozzle, ruining both the carpet and vacuum cleaner in the process.
2. Use the nozzle to clean the hard-to-reach edges of the carpet.
3. Vacuum in both horizontal and vertical directions. A simple one pass-through of the carpet is not enough to completely rid of dirt. As the rug’s fibers are coarse and twisted, going both directions would ensure that the cleaner takes away all dust that has accumulated in all areas.

Spot Clean Your Carpet

There are times when you have just cleaned your carpet and you accidentally spill your drink or food on it, which left an unsightly spot on the rug. Clearing the area and washing the whole carpet would be time and effort consuming. In this occasion, it is recommended that you spot treat your carpet to save time while still ensuring a clean and aesthetically pleasing to the eye rug.

1. Get a clean white rag to wash your carpet with. It is recommended that a clean and white cloth is used as any rag that has patterns and color might accidentally bleed out and stain the carpet, doing more harm than good. For tiny spots, paper towels could be an alternative. Avoid the harsh bristles of a brush in cleaning as these could fray the carpet’s fibers.
2. If you’re using soap or carpet shampoo, better test it out first on a small area of the carpet to ensure that it is safe for use on your rug. Some products have bleach that may change its color so better be safe than sorry.
3. Moisten the cloth with the solution and gently damp it on the affected spot. Do not scrub it vigorously as this could destroy the fibers of the rug. Scrubbing could also press the liquid that has caused the stain deeper into the fibers, making it more difficult to remove. Also avoid putting on too much cleaning solution as it could attract more dust and particles on the spot that would make the stain more obvious.
4. Rinse it off with water and blot any remaining liquid with another clean white cloth or paper towels. Dry the area out before returning furniture and having anyone step on it.

Dry Clean Your Carpet

Contrary to its title, this method of cleaning actually uses moisture to clean the carpet, albeit at a very small amount. The advantage of this is that your carpet is ready to use immediately after clean up, with no drying time required.

1. Vacuum the carpet first to remove any dust and grime that have accumulated. This would also lessen the amount of dry cleaning agent needed to wash the rug.
2. Get the dry cleaning agent and sprinkle it all over the carpet. You could also use a DIY cleaning mixture made from baking soda and corn flour mixed with a pinch of laundry detergent to give off a fresh scent after.
3. Once you have sprinkled it all over, sweep the powder so that it covers all areas of the carpet and it goes deeper into the fibers where dirt and the stain might have taken residence in.
4. Leave the powder in the carpet overnight and vacuum the excess powder the following day.
