Windows at 30, Slack Live Beta Systemd-less
Today in Linux news, Windows turns 30 and The Verge has a pictorial. In other news, AlienBob said Slackware Live will remain without systemd "for a while" and The Register overheard a GNOME bugzilla report crediting a cat for finding a bug. Happy Birthday Windows? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction... for every righteous act there is an evil... I know there's a metaphor in there somewhere... For better or worse, Thursday apparently marked the 30th anniversary of the announcement of Windows 1.0. I don't really remember Windows 1.0, or 2.0, but I remember 3.0. Some folks say it's gotten better since then. Would there have been Linux without Windows? Surely, but would it have been as much fun? No way. The Verge has a screenshot of each version of Windows since 1.0.
Eric Hameleers, aka AlienBob today posted that he has released a beta of Slackware Live to test over the weekend. He also noted he would be able to avoid systemd for "a while" by using Gentoo's eudev and ConsoleKit2. Syslinux is the bootloader and mkinitrd will do the initrd.img. The ISOs are hybrid, so one can install on DVD or USB; the next release will have persistent memory. He's even included NVIDIA drivers selectable at boot. Hameleers said he tried to stay as true to original Slackware as possible, but the Xfce version is "severely slimmed-down." The other option comes with Plasma 5. More details are at AlienBob's.
Dominique Leuenberger posted the latest on Tumbleweed today saying, "The weed has been steadily tumbling. A solid three snapshots have been published this week (with a 4th one being tested right now in openQA)." He then said new goodies this week include GNOME 3.18.2, X.Org 1.18, and KDE Apps 15.08.3. He also said the newest snapshot currently compiling will have new default system fonts and Linux 4.3.0.
