THE forthcoming Tokyo Motor Show will see a trio of concept cars unveiled - including a sports car that could be on its way to showrooms in the near future.

The S-FR sports car concept has been designed to celebrate Toyota's heritage of lightweight sports cars, such as the S800 and 2000GT from the 60s.

It's seen as an entry-level sports car, below the GT86 in the company's model line-up, and the focus is on it being responsive and fun to drive. Indeed, Toyota thinks it will be a car that will inspire the legions of drivers who like to customise their ride.

Compact and with a fuss-free, simple design, the S-FR is also lightweight, with a front-engined, rear-driven character, regarded as the classic layout for a sports car.

There is no official word on the S-FR going into production, but the company is on record as saying that it would like to have three sports cars in its line-up, one above and one below the GT86.

Hot on the heels of the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell car going on sale, Toyota will also show a more futuristic concept using the technology. The FCV Plus is intended to show that hydrogen fuel cells are not just suitable for motoring, but also for general use in day-to-day life.

So as well as having its own hydrogen tank, the FCV Plus can generate electricity from hydrogen stored outside the vehicle, which means it can be used to produce power at home or work, for example. When the car is not being used for travelling, it can share its power generation capabilities

with local communities as part of the infrastructure.

Finally, the Kikai concept makes a feature of its mechanical parts, much like some hot rods. The cars inner workings - including the

fuel tank, exhaust, analogue meters and switchgear - are

now part of the car's exterior design, with a small window by the driver's feet even giving a view of the tyres, suspension and road surface.
