Chipotle's lawyers are working overtime these days. The maligned burrito chain has faced lawsuits aplenty as of late, largely due to the multiple food safety disasters that have haunted the chain these past few months.
The latest E. coli victim to file suit against the company is a 25-year-old woman who fell "violently ill" after eating at a Chipotle in Norman, Okla. in mid-November, according to KOCO. She claims she was sick for two weeks, and is seeking more than $75,000 in damages. Per the report, a total of three E. coli illnesses were traced back to that particular location. (Chipotle does not comment on pending litigation.)
But E. coli and norovirus-related complaints aren't the only things keeping Chipotle in the courtroom these days: Per WLWT, the company was just ordered to pay three former general managers nearly $200,000 each after a federal grand jury in Cincinnati, Ohio ruled the women "were discriminated against and fired because of their gender." One woman was terminated shortly after returning from maternity leave; the suit also detailed grossly sexist behavior from a former area manager and his supervisor, such as the latter once commenting, "There sure are a lot of overweight women working here."
Other lawsuits Chipotle has faced recently include one from its own investors which alleges that the company misled its shareholders about the safety of its food. Perhaps the thousands of free burritos the company just gave away via text message will help stem the tide of lawsuits?
