In Loving Memory of Rita B. Sabiega Dutter, 92

Obituary and service information from H.M. Patterson & Son-Canton Hill Chapel in East Cobb.

Rita B. Sabiega Dutter, daughter of James Francis and Marie LaTaille Burke, was born in Brooklyn, NY, January 16, 1923.

Rita graduated from St. Aloysius Elementary School and Grover Cleveland High School in Queens, NY. She also attended Cleveland College, Cleveland, OH.

Rita studied coded tape and transmitted coded cable for Western Union Telegraph Co. in NY City before enlisting in the Women’s Army Air Corps during World War II and serving in the Signal Corps of the Army Air Force.

Rita is a 50 year member of The American Legion and was a charter member of the North Salem, NY, Post 1866, and donated both Post and American Flags in memory of her parents.

Following the war, Rita worked for the Erie Railroad in Cleveland, OH. Upon moving back to New York, she worked for the Westchester County Newspapers as a Teletype setter.

Rita also worked as a real estate agent and was for many years an administrative assistant in a law office.

Rita’s husband, John D. Sabiega, died in 1968.

Rita raised two daughters, Mary Monica and Jacqueline Anne. Monica is an employee of Emory Healthcare and Jackie, an artist, passed away at the age of twenty four.

Rita and her second husband, Elwood Dutter, traveled extensively and lived in Arizona, Florida and Maine.

Rita moved to Marietta, Georgia, to be near her daughter, Monica, when Elwood passed away. She is survived by her daughter, Monica Maher, her son-in law, Edward Maher, Elwood’s son Richard Dutter and his wife Karen and two grandsons, Chris and Patrick Dutter.

Rita was an avid, voracious reader her entire life and passed that gift of ‘ love of reading’ to her children.

She will be buried next to her daughter, Jacqueline Sabiega Bushee, in Manchester, Vermont.
