PROVINCETOWN — A man who police believe started a fight Friday evening and then caused his own head injury was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

Police were called at 7:07 p.m. to a report of a fight involving five people outside the Boatslip Resort at 161 Commercial St., near Central Street, Provincetown police Sgt. Glenn Enos said. The incident occurred after a dance at the entertainment and lodging complex, as a crowd was leaving the property, Enos said.

The man is believed to have been ejected from the dance for accosting several patrons and then once outside, he began gesticulating, striking other dance patrons and passers-by, the police said. In the midst of that, the man fell down face first on the pavement on Central Street, causing his injury.

He was taken by rescuers to the Provincetown Municipal Airport to meet the helicopter, Enos said.

The incident is still under investigation, but police will likely not bring charges against the man since he appeared to be the instigator of the fight and did not cause injury to anyone but himself, Enos said.
