Twitter has suspended more than 125,000 accounts threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily relating to the Islamic State terrorist group, since the middle of last year.

The social network, in a blog posted yesterday, outlined its position on such accounts, saying that it had bolstered numbers to deal with reports of terrorist-related activities online.

“In July 2015, FBI director James Comey recognised Twitter’s commitment to blocking terrorist content, praising us as ‘very good and thoughtful and hardworking at trying to shut down [terrorism-related] accounts’,” the blog said.

“As many experts and other companies have noted, there is no ‘magic algorithm’ for identifying terrorist content on the internet, so global online platforms are forced to make challenging judgment calls based on very limited information and guidance,”
