Sleepy Hollow Football Club - Week 8 Game Recaps

The Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow Club Soccer Teams had an exciting Week 8

The U9 Warriors unwind after a hard fought victory.

With the prior Sunday’s games largely washed out the Sleepy Hollow Football Club was back in action June 6th and 7th. The schedule was overflowing; many teams played their rescheduled game on Saturday and their regular game on Sunday.
With the field work in Tarrytown our field crew and administrators have gotten creative. Some games have been moved to Losee and others to Hackley. Thanks to their hard work the kids got to play some great soccer on quality pitches this past weekend.

Below are game updates prepared by the SHFC all volunteer coaching crew.

U9 Girls – Magic

The SHFC Magic were defeated by the Rye Bolts by the score 6-0. Rye presented a balanced attack and scored three goals in each half. Although the Magic mounted several scoring chances they were unable to get past the solid defense of the Bolts. The Magic were paced by strong play by co-captains Shea Bertolacci and Natalie Rypka, and also saw some flashes of speed from mid-fielder Talia Lieberman. Next up for the Magic is a home contest against the New York Rush Patriots.

U9 Boys – Sentinels

This week the Sentinels suffered their first loss of the spring season in a tough game against the White Plains Dragons. The Dragons jumped out to a quick start and scored two early goals in the first half. The Sentinels regrouped and picked up their play, and the teams traded goals over the balance of the game, with the final score being 4-2. The Sentinels look to rebound next week with a Saturday game against the Pelham Pythons and a Sunday game against the Rockland Raptors.

U9 Boys – Warriors

A passionate and huge win came on Sunday for the Warriors as they defeated Bronx Colts 2-1. Tucker Junge had a great game; taking on keeper position in the 1st half with some excellent saves and in the 2nd half continuing with solid defense. A few minutes before the end of the 1st half the Warriors broke through and Callum Gallagher lined up Leo Jercinovic perfectly to knock the ball in and go out with the crucial 1-0 lead. Roberto Molina did some excellent midfield work throughout the game and Hugo Jercinovic again showed his prowess in defense. This was a physical game resulting in many injuries for our players but they all got up again and fought on. Leo Jercinovic got himself into goal scoring position again and made the lead 2-0. A long shot by Bronx late into the 2nd half sailed into the net assisted with wind. The Warriors know they may be in for relegation after a tough season but these wins heading into its conclusion are crucial to hopefully avoid it. The last game will be against Edgemont Blue Orcas.

U10 Girls – Red Angels

On Sunday, the Red Angels, this week captained by Ajsa Orban, won 4-1 against the New Rochelle Twisters. Isabelle Murphy had a hat trick and Thalia Tsilibes added a goal on a penalty kick. Despite the three goal difference, the game was very competitive. Ajsa Orban played terrific in goalie, playing aggressive and challenging the talented strikers of New Rochelle. Samuella Schroeder, Angie Santos and Julia Schroeder played solid defense, minimizing the impact of the many offensive attacks.

U10 Boys – Legends
The Legends possessed the ball really well in the first half of their game with Somers on Sunday but couldn’t convert pressure into a goal. In the 2nd they finally broke through with a Jai W. goal off a Justin C. cross. A few minutes later Brandon M. followed up with a beautiful half volley from the edge of the area into the side netting. For the 3rd, Kyan A. fed Julian B. who in turn crossed for striker Nikhil W. to finish confidently in the corner. Defensively Kenneth S. and Massimo S. were impeccable, while keepers Kieran O. and Max M. did everything that was needed to keep the sheet clean. Next week-end the boys have 2 away games to finish the season.

U11 Girls – Strikers

The Strikers were enthusiastic, looking for their fourth consecutive win played at Scarsdale. Before the Strikers could find their rhythm the home team found the back of the net with long high shot right under the crossbar. The Strikers kicked up the intensity, worked harder to maintain possession, and started making more accurate passes. The tying goal was scored by Shennah, she received a great ball from Alicia, on a perfectly controlled touch, and finished with a well-placed shot past the GK. The team’s 2nd goal was scored on a breakaway goal from Juliana, her shot had so much pace the keeper couldn’t keep it out despite getting a hand on it. The 3rd goal was made a few minutes before halftime by Abbey on a true team effort. In the the team added to its lead on goals by Sabrina and Juliana giving them a comfortable lead of 5-1. The defense played strong lead by Arianna, Grace, Annalieka and Kiera. Both goalkeeper Olivia and Dyaln played very well controlling the back.

The Strikers have a busy weekend ahead. The Wiz of Oss tournament on Saturday and a match against Gotham Girls Potrero on Sunday at Losee. A win Sunday would make the Strikers division champions in the 4th division, with perfect sportsmanship points.

U11 Boys – Tornadoes

Visitors Asphalt Green Wave started strong vs. the Tornadoes on Sunday, leading 0-2 at the half. After technical correctives and the question, “Do you believe you can win it?” from the crack Tornadoes coaching staff, the 31st minute opened on a different pair of teams. Monteforte netted from center mid (Dorman assist), Jailite scored his first of the regular season on a top corner curve (Dorman assist), Dorman finished a quick one two from Burnett and Saquipay, Taylor nailed a hybrid Messi/Neymar run, and Dorman scored a brace with a poised hesitation fake on the Wave keeper. Gallagher pressured the midfield with characteristic patience and skill. Tornadoes keepers Monteforte and Ricchiuti held off Wave attacks, with Ricchiuti performing a highlight-reel-split-block with lightning speed. Defenders Wozniak and McLaurin launched the ball up field like catapults. Final was 5-2. The Tornadoes face division friends/rivals/leaders the Falcons in Riverdale next week.

U12 Girls – Mustangs
The Mustangs continued with the difficult adjustment to the second division. On Saturday they travelled to third place Mamaronek in a makeup game following last week’s rainout. The Mustangs were without starting keeper Carolina Lopez and striker Sophie Syves Berry and started flat against the Red Lions. Mamaronek scored first off a corner kick and a beautiful header then second off a hand ball penalty kick. The Mustangs were unable to recover and fell 0-2. On Sunday the Mustangs faced 2nd place Pleasantville who defeated the Mustangs 0-5 several weeks earlier. The Mustangs played one of their best games to date and controlled possession for most of the game. Pleasantville scored first on a breakaway no call foul against Caroline Grimes. Their second goal was off a controversial hand ball penalty kick also in the first half. The Mustangs continued to play tough and finished out the majority of the game scoreless falling 0-2.

U13 Girls – Horsemen
The Horsemen lost a hard-fought match to the visiting Edgemont Sharks.

Both teams were evenly matched through halftime, with neither team gaining the upper hand on the scoreboard.

Shortly after the break Edgemont found an opening at the top of the penalty box and put the ball past the keeper. From there, the game became a physical battle with both teams finding chances but with no breakthrough for either side.

Edgemont did manage to convert another chance close to time and the match ended 0-2 in the visitor’s favor.

The Horsemen finish their spring season with a trip to Yonkers on 6/14 to face the Rush Raptors at Tibbets Brook Park.

U13 Boys – Tornadoes
Tornadoes Defeat the Mamaroneck Red Hawks 3-1.
The Tornadoes got off to a fast start thanks to some quick moves in the box by DJ Cronin and an alert pass to Michael Richards for the tap-in. The Tornadoes had several chances in the first have to increase the lead but could not capitalize. 20 minutes into the second half DJ Cronin headed in a lovely cross from Michael Richards. 7 minutes later Jonathan Orellano put one over the keeper’s head with a blast from 24 yards out. Devin Batheja was solid in just his second start as keeper and it looked like he would record a clean sheet until a fortunate bounce found a Red Hawk striker in the box for a score with just under 3 minutes to play. The Tornadoes dominated possession and scoring chances in the second half. The Tornadoes will play host to the feisty New Rochelle Raptors Sunday at 1:00 at Hackley.

U14 Girls - Eagles
On Sunday 6/7 the U14 girls Eagles, managed this week by Assistant Coach Howard Allen, lost 0-1 on their home turf to the undefeated Division 1 leading Mahopac Flames. While it is unfortunate the team lost, the girls played a great game against a very high scoring and strong team. If not for the intense defensive play by Zarina Nabi as well as tough goalkeeping by Grace Hille, the score could have been much higher. Midfielder Julia Freidman helped create many scoring opportunities but unfortunately the the team was unable to capitalize on them. The Eagles play their next game on 6/14 at Dobbs Ferry High School against the DUSC Strikers.
