Destiny's Solution for PS3/Xbox 360 Hard Drive Size Issues

Today's Destiny update is so large that the game will not work on some PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 models, namely the 20 GB versions. This much was announced last month, when Activision also confirmed that Destiny requires all files to be installed on the hard drive, not an external or USB flash drive.

At the time, Activision said the "limited number" of people in this situation could reach out to Activision Customer Support for a solution if they were an "existing and active" Destiny player with a registered account before September 15. Now, that solution has been revealed, and it's pretty nice.

A GameSpot reader playing Destiny on a 20 GB Xbox 360 tells us that they reached out to Activision to inquire about this solution. Acitivision mailed this person a 32 GB USB 3.0 drive, which was nice, but, as Activision said earlier, all Destiny files needed to be installed directly to the on-board hard drive.

This is true right now, but Activision says it will deploy a patch in the near future that provides the ability to play Destiny with files stored on a secondary drive, such as a USB drive.

So there you have it. If you're still playing Destiny on a 20 GB PS3 or Xbox 360 there is a solution that doesn't require spending hundreds on a new PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. But you need to act quickly, as the upgrade solution is only good for one more week, expiring the day The Taken King launches next week. [Edit: It turns out this promotion is valid until December 31. So if you get the game as a gift for the holidays, you'll still have time to take advantage of the deal!]
