Barcelona have swept aside all before them this season, winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey before sealing their place in history with a triumph in the Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin.

So where do they go from here? Can this team - who are currently under a transfer embargo until January - get any better? That was the challenge handed to Sky Sports expert Graeme Souness after he watched their triumph in the Olympiastadion.

He pointed to Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano at the heart of the defence as an area for improvement. Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen are also in their defensive ranks but Souness believes that is one area of the squad that could benefit from reinforcements.

I think there are defenders out there who are every bit as good as Javier Mascherano.

"I think you can improve the centre-backs," Souness told Sky Sports.

"I know the number one thing a centre half must have for Barcelona is football. They must be able to take the ball and make passes.

"But I think there are defenders out there who are every bit as good as Javier Mascherano."

He added: "Mascherano had his moments in the second half with a couple of crunching tackles but he made a couple of big mistakes that could have cost them dearly early on.

"So I think that's a very obvious area."

Barcelona cannot sign any players until January next year following their 14-month transfer ban after being found guilty of breaching FIFA's rules on the transfer of players aged U18.

However, Souness does not think the ban will affect the European champions because of their famed youth system.
