Tarrytown Everyday Hero: Sherry Saturno

Do you know someone making a difference in our community? Patch wants to tell their story in a new series we’re calling “Everyday Heroes.” We are looking to share inspirational and uplifting stories of people who work to change others’ lives for the better.

Details of good work

Sherry both lives and works in Tarrytown, and she is the Executive Director of the non-profit organization Hudson Valley Care Coalition at 303 South Broadway. Her organization focuses on care coordination between physical and behavioral healthcare to assist a vulnerable and underserved population. She just graduated from a national Social Work Leadership Fellowship Recipient at New York University Silver School of Social Work.

Sherry completed the 18 month post-graduate fellowship with a presentation advocating how care managers in the community can help their clients avoid becoming re-hospitalized or having to make frequent trips to the emergency room. Sherry is a great advocate for the elderly, and has testified in legal proceedings to protect seniors who were being financially and physically abused in the community. She is a mentor to social work students and volunteers to speak at universities to help students find their job paths.

Sherry recently made a documentary short film, “Human Investment”, and this film focuses on what drives dedicated professionals to invest themselves in the humanity of care for the seriously ill, elderly, and the dying. She was named the Social Worker of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for the state of New York; NASW Social Worker of the Year for Westchester County, NY; and a Rising Star by the Business Council of Westchester, NY.

She is a graduate of the Volunteer Center of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s Leadership Westchester Class. She is also a founding member of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s Women’s Leadership Council, which aims to assist local women in improving their lives. She is currently at work on a new short film about social worker safety, to help prevent fellow social workers from being injured when they are working in volatile situations.

I feel Sherry is an Everyday Hero because:

Sherry works so hard to help other people, and she brings comfort and hope to the elderly and the sick. Sherry is kind and supportive, has been a friend to clients who were sick and dying, and provided reassurance to their family members. She has demonstrated strength as well as compassion in her career as a social worker, by helping clients in nursing homes and hospitals, and those who suffered from depression. She is a true humanitarian who works very hard to help the people of Tarrytown.
