This Toshiba 2TB USB 3.0 Drive works well, BUT...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my second Toshiba USB 3.0 2TB thin drive. The first one I had for about 2 years (blue) when is started having problems, so I ordered this one as a replacement. So, so far this drives has worked well (2 months), but keep in mind that there are 2 drawbacks: (1) it takes almost 7-8 seconds to rev up and become usable after it sits idle for a while (a couple of minutes or less), as did my first 2TB Toshiba, and (2) the first one I had lasted only a little under 2 years, which I do not find really acceptable. So, I may have to write in again in the future if or when this one starts dying. I have been using it as a first line storage, as opposed to using the internal hard drive in my computer, and which would have meant that I use the external Toshiba one as backup. I do this so I can transport the external Toshiba drive and use it on other computers, such as I do with my laptop, and thus, have all my data at hand. I also use it on some of my other computers (I have many) as well. I use the internal hard drive more as the backup for this reason, so everyday or every 2-3 days I backup all the data on the Toshiba to my internal hard drive, and then to my NAS drive as well. One backup is not enough for my very valuable data! It may turn out that this usage technique may 'over use' the external drive, and hence perhaps why my first one lasted only 2 years, or so. My internal hard drives typically last for 8-15 years. But this reason for the previous Toshiba unit's short life is just a guess on my part. But if you purchase this external Toshiba drive at a very good price (@ $70 or less), then this is a very good deal and a very nice product. I have a very large amount of personal data, so I need a 2TB removable drive, and this one is small, easy to carry, and has NO NEED for and outlet, which is very nice when traveling! I have a retired (still working) 1.5TB Toshiba drive, but it does not hold enough data. If this new one craps out in 2 years or less again, I may just may have to buy another one!

Very dependable and great price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Been using these for years and own now six of them. Never an issue as of yet. Very small-not much bigger than the physical raw drive. The USB cable is a separate cable so in the event of a cable failure, your drive does not have to leave your control. I do recommend this drive.

Must have for Xbox One!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this external hard drive to be used solely for my Xbox One & I must say that I wish I had purchased this thing when I first bought my Xbox! It's so much faster than the Xbox One's internal memory thanks to the likes of the zippy USB 3.0 ports & you'll definitely notice much better load times! Now, I have more than enough memory to last me for at least a few more years with having 2 1/2 TB's total. It also saves me from having to carry around my Xbox One to friends houses, but instead, just bring my external hard drive with me. It's so much more convenient & I'd recommend this if you're in the market for some extra storage for the Xbox One.

Excellent Purchase
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are a lot of negative reviews about the installation software being confusing and perhaps not working. If you are running Vista or Windows 7, you do not need to use the software! I am pretty sure the same goes for Windows 8 but I do not run that so I don't know for sure. It is truly plug and play: 1) plug it in 2) Wait for windows to load the drivers to make the HD work. 3) move your files from their location into the hard drive's window 4) When done transferring, make sure to open the task bar in the lower right corner, find the hard drive's icon, right click on it and click on 'eject'. The computer will then tell you it is safe to remove your hard drive. If you do not know how to move files from one location to another, please search online for "how to cut and paste". There are other ways to move files but Cut and Paste is the most basic and will work fine. If you do not know how to properly eject a hard drive, please search that as well. There are some awesome guides. Beyond that, it's a hard drive. It acts and looks like a hard drive. I like it's speed but honestly who sits around and waits for files to transfer? "The computer says this transfer will take an hour so I will just sit here watching the screen for that hour." It's got an awesome amount of storage space (1.8Tb after formatting) which seemed small to me at first, then I threw every digital media file I have ever created in the last 20 years into it. It only took 25% of the HD. I really like the portability. Before it broke my old external hard drive was the kind that is powered by a wall outlet. Portable means the hard drive is powered by the computer and that is really convenient. One less outlet needed means far easier placement for your computer and all it's toys. Owned it for about a month now. No issues. Someone said they didn't like the look of the HD, I don't mind it. It's a nice flat black and I don't plan on showing it off to dinner guests. As far as noise is concerned, I can barely hear it. You would need to be specifically listening for the HD to hear it.

Sleek, compact and huge capacity
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Toshiba Canvio Connect USB 3.0 2TB external drive has an excellent value overall. It's made by a company known for quality and durable electronic products and the design is sleek, modern and astonishingly compact for having a humongous amount of storage capacity - 2TB. Transfer rate was blazing fast on USB 3.0 but I was also able to use it in USB 2.0 with decent performance. Now I have transferred all my photos, videos and documents from 4 different hard drives and barely even used up a quarter of the memory space. Installation was plug and play but you may want to avoid the backup software that came with it.

Good product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Nothing to complain about this external drive. It is to store all my photos and PDF documents. I only drop/drag and copy/paste. I don't have my own computer, so I was not able to download the program that comes with it. I'm not a computer savvy, so I'm not very confident if my files are safe. Hopefully it would not de-format if disconnect improperly like regular USB.

Just what I was hoping for so far
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this drive to store a second back-up of my 400 GB or so music collection. I wasn't entirely sure it would work with my older computer, since I'm not sure if its USB ports are even 2.0, but so far the drive has worked great. Just plugged it in and it showed up as a lettered drive. It's not the fastest, probably due to my older computer, but I was able to copy my entire music collection plus photos, some videos, documents, etc, to it over the course of three days or so. I copied everything I could think of to back up, and didn't even use half of the storage space yet. So far I'm very happy with the drive.

Very pleased
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I actually bought this hard drive based off a recommendation from a friend who has the same one. I loved hers, so I bought this one, but upgrading to a 2TB instead of the 1TB. So far, I am very pleased with this hard drive. The installation was super easy, and the initial back up of my laptop's hard drive was easy and quick. The USB 3.0 compatibility makes for some seriously fast data transfer speeds. It's a good thing too, because not 24 hours after buying this hard drive and backing up my system, I cracked my laptop screen. This device made it so much easier to transfer my files to my husband's laptop until I could get it fixed. On top of having all my files automatically backed up, I have tons of other files to hold data I am constantly moving, such as my school assignments, pictures and movies. Only time will tell if this hard drive holds up, but so far, I love everything about it. I would recommend buying a good carrying case, which I did, to keep everything together (your hard drive and the cable). I would most definitely recommend to anyone, especially to someone who might not be computer savvy. It's very easy to use and extremely portable.

Q: QuestionDoes this unit work with Windows Vista? Is the omission of Vista in the listing of system requirements merely an oversight? I see one reviewer said he installed it, but I just want to be sure. Thanks!
Asked by Jerry.
- A:Answer I think it was an over sight because my computer is Vista and it works just fine! The salesman at Best Buy told me it would work and he was right!

Q: QuestionCan this drive be used with PC and Mac, multiple units, without reformatting?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer This drive comes with Tuxera for Mac. This is a software driver that loads onto the Mac and allows all current Intel based Mac OS’s to both read and write to the NTFS partition. With this driver it is possible to transfer files between Mac OS and Windows or Linux with no issues. With this method however Time Machine will not back up to the Canvio HDD. In order to utilize Time Machine the drive must be reformatted specifically for the Mac OS.

Asked by Mike.
- A:Answer Yes it will work, but it will take longer to transfer the data.

Q: QuestionHardware-based EncryptionIs the encryption on the drive itself or the enclosure's controller chip? In other words, if someone were to remove the drive from the enclosure and put in in a separate enclosure, is the actual drive itself still encrypted?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer The encryption is part of a chipset in the plastic housing, not the drive itself.
